Wasteisolation (stylized in all caps) is the debut studio album by Canadian noise pop duo Black Dresses, released on April 13, 2018. [1] [2]
The album was recorded between late 2017 and early 2018 and was created entirely through online collaboration with audio files being sent between band members Ada Rook and Devi McCallion via Twitter direct messages. [2] [3] The album was released on April 13, 2018. [4] Dreams Come True 2019, an EP of Wasteisolation remixes, was released for its first anniversary, [5] and the duo's fourth studio album Peaceful as Hell was later released on its second anniversary. [6] [7]
Musically, the album has been described as noise pop and industrial pop, [1] [3] and was inspired by noise and pop music of the 2010s such as Sleigh Bells and Linkin Park. [2] [8] [9] The album explores themes such as child sexual abuse, trauma, isolation, existence, rage, transmisogyny, and politicians' use of the term "thoughts and prayers". [1] [2] [3] [10] The treatment of themes such as trauma on the album has been described as hopeful and cathartic, and McCallion said that they had aimed "for people to resonate with it if they’ve been in that dark place" when covering such themes. [2] [11]
James Rettig of Stereogum felt that the album was catchy and danceable, and praised the queer themes on the album concluding "That back-and-forth struggle should be familiar to anyone who identifies as queer: the pull between just wanting to exist and not wanting to die. That’s the experience that WASTEISOLATION captures best, in all its grotesque and beautiful glory." [1] Sasha Geffen of The Fader described the album as "raw, abrasive, and deliriously catchy" and said that its songs "offer comfort and catharsis not because they promise that everything will get better but because they show you how to riot through hell." [2]
The album was featured in Noisey 's July "40 Essential Albums You Probably Missed So Far in 2018" list in which Colin Joyce praised the album's musical style and heavy lyrical themes, and felt that despite these heavy themes "[McCallion] and Rook find some hope embedded in the chaos. Even at their most frayed, they feel triumphant, somehow." [10] Nylon included the album on their list of 11 Unapologetically Queer Albums You Might Have Missed This Summer and summarised the album saying "More punk than any album with guitars, Black Dresses uses glitchy soundscapes and guttural moaning to express the desperation of trans women who just want to be left the fuck alone." [9] The Fader described the song "Wiggle" as a standout track, listing it as one of their "20 songs you're sleeping on right now" list in April 2018. [12]
The album was a viral success on the video-sharing website TikTok. The success of songs on the album led to invasion of privacy and extended harassment against McCallion by what the duo described as "entitled fans", eventually leading to the disbandment of the duo in 2020. [13] [14] [15] [16]

Frou Frou are an English electronic duo composed of musician Imogen Heap and producer/songwriter Guy Sigsworth. They released their only album, Details, in 2002. The duo wrote, produced, and played instruments on the tracks, while Heap also provided lead vocals. In 2004, they recorded a cover of "Holding Out for a Hero" by Bonnie Tyler, which was used in the credits of the 2004 film Shrek 2. Frou Frou amicably disbanded later that year.

She is known for her independent releases, inspired by Frank O'Hara's poetry, DIY ethics of K Records and the early 2000s New York City's anti-folk scene. She is the daughter of actors Kevin Kline and Phoebe Cates. Her former stage name "Frankie Cosmos" is now the name of her band.
Girlpool was an indie rock band from Los Angeles, California, formed by friends Avery Tucker and Harmony Tividad. Their debut self-titled EP Girlpool was released on Bandcamp in 2014 and re-released on Wichita Recordings later that year. They released their debut album Before the World Was Big in 2015, followed by Powerplant (2017) and What Chaos Is Imaginary (2019). Their fourth and final studio album, Forgiveness (2022), was released on April 29. In August 2022, the duo announced that they will be taking an indefinite break from the band.

Gabby's World is the recording project of Gabrielle Smith, an American singer-songwriter and producer from Brooklyn. Smith began making and releasing experimental ambient music in 2007. Since then, the solo project has turned into a four-piece indie pop band made up of Bellows's Oliver Kalb, Told Slant’s Felix Walworth, Sharpless's Jack Greenleaf and Smith. Felix Walworth has since been replaced by Ian Cory of Lamniformes.
The discography of Turnover, an American rock band, consists of five studio albums, four extended plays, six music videos and five appearances on compilation and split albums. The band was formed in 2009 in Virginia Beach, Virginia and released their eponymous extended play two years later on Broken Rim Records. This first project has been described as emo and pop punk. In 2012, the band signed to Run for Cover Records and put out a split with Citizen. The next year, Turnover released their debut album, Magnolia, on Run for Cover Records. Despite maintaining their declaration of disbandment in 2020, Black Dresses released three additional albums, Forever in Your Heart (2021), Forget Your Own Face (2022), and Laughingfish (2024). Upon releasing Laughingfish, the band announced that it would be their final album.
Peaceful as Hell is the fourth studio album by Canadian noise pop duo Black Dresses. It was released on April 13, 2020, the second anniversary of their first studio album Wasteisolation, under Blacksquares Records. It was preceded by the lead single of the album "Creep U" which was released on April 7. The album was the duo's last album before their announced disbandment in May 2020 due to harassment of the band following their unexpected success on platforms such as TikTok. Despite this, they released a follow-up record, Forever in Your Heart, the following year.
Love and Affection for Stupid Little Bitches is the third studio album by Canadian noise pop duo Black Dresses. Released on August 1, 2019, the album was their third in two years following Wasteisolation (2018) and Thank You (2019).

Erika de Casier is a Portuguese-born Danish singer, songwriter, and record producer. She began her career performing as half of the R&B duo Saint Cava. After the duo disbanded, she independently released her debut studio album, Essentials, in 2019. She signed to British record label 4AD in 2020 and released her second studio album, Sensational, in 2021.
Forever in Your Heart is the fifth studio album by Canadian noise pop duo Black Dresses. Released on February 14, 2021 by Blacksquares Records, it was their first album since the band broke up in May 2020 just weeks after the release of their previous album Peaceful as Hell in April 2020. The duo cited harassment directed towards band member Devi McCallion by fans as the reason for the disbandment. The album was announced via a tweet in which the duo clarified that they were still disbanded, saying "We’re no longer a band unfortunately. Regardless, we’ve decided to keep putting out music." The album consists of songs recorded in 2020, but it was not revealed whether it was recorded before or after the breakup of the band.
Forget Your Own Face is the sixth studio album by Canadian noise pop duo Black Dresses. It was released on February 14, 2022, exactly one year after the release of their previous album Forever in Your Heart, and is the second album released by the duo since their announced disbandment in May 2020. With the release of Forever in Your Heart, the duo clarified that they had nonetheless not reunited as a band, and The Fader described Forget Your Own Face as a continuation of their "not-reunion". Released under Blacksquares Records, the album was preceded by the Patreon-only release of the song "u_u2" on February 1.
