The Arab Club Champions Cup is an annual regional club football competition organised by the Union of Arab Football Associations (UAFA) and contested by elite clubs from the Arab world. The tournament is contested by a total of 38 teams – 19 from the Asian Football Confederation and 19 from the Confederation of African Football.
The 1981–82 Arab Club Champions Cup was the first edition of the Arab Club Champions Cup. The first edition featured three teams, after the withdrawals of Libyan side Al-Ahli Tripoli, Saudi team Al-Nassr and Somali club Horseed.

Al Ahly Volleyball Club, also called "The Masters" is one of Al Ahly SC club's sections that represent the club in Egypt and in international volleyball competitions. The club team section has been based in Cairo since 1932. Al Ahly volleyball team can be considered the greatest team in Africa and the Middle East. It has played in the Egyptian Volleyball League without interruption since 1957. Al Ahly is the most titled club in the Egyptian Volleyball league with 33 titles. Also, the team has participated in African Clubs Championship since 1980 and achieved the title 14 times.

The 2015–16 Saudi Professional League was the 40th season of the Saudi Professional League, the top Saudi professional league for association football clubs, since its establishment in 1976. The season began on 19 August 2015 and ended on 14 May 2016. Al-Nassr were the two time defending champions having won their seventh title last season. The league was contested by the 12 teams from the 2014–15 season as well as Al-Qadisiyah and Al-Wehda, who joined as the promoted clubs from the 2014–15 First Division. They replace Al-Orobah and Al-Shoulla who were relegated to the 2015–16 First Division.

The match was originally scheduled to be played in 2020 but due was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic which caused postponements during the semi final stage of the competition. Moroccan club Raja Casablanca beat Saudi side Al-Ittihad Jeddah 4–3 on penalties after a 4–4 draw to earn their second Arab Club Champions Cup title.
