Wendy Hughes (born 28 February 1968),formerly known as Wendy Hughes-Madondo,is a South African judge of the Supreme Court of Appeal. Formerly an attorney in private practice,she was a judge of the Gauteng High Court from July 2013 until July 2021,when she was appointed to the Supreme Court of Appeal.
Hughes was born on 28 February 1968 in present-day KwaZulu-Natal. [1] She matriculated at Wentworth Senior Secondary School in Durban and attended the University of Durban–Westville,where she completed a BProc in 1993 and an LLB in 1996. Later,in 1999,she received an advanced diploma in labour law from the Rand Afrikaans University. [1]
Hughes was an articled clerk at Mlaba Makhaye and Partners in Durban between 1993 and 1995,and she was admitted as an attorney in December 1995. [1] In 1996,she joined Kruger Ngcobo,a KwaZulu-Natal-based firm,where she worked for five years. She left to become the sole director of her own firm,Hughes-Madondo Incorporated,which she ran between 2001 and 2013. [1] During this period,from 1999 to 2005,she was also a part-time commissioner at the Commission for Conciliation,Mediation and Arbitration in KwaZulu-Natal. [1]
Between June 2008 and June 2009,Hughes completed the Aspirant Women Judges Programme,which aimed to elevate women to the bench of the High Court of South Africa. After that,she was invited to act as a judge in the High Court on several occasions –in the KwaZulu-Natal Division in 2009,in the Northern Cape Division between 2010 and 2012,and in the Gauteng Division between 2012 and 2013. [1]
In April 2013,the Judicial Service Commission recommended Hughes for permanent appointment to the Gauteng High Court. [2] President Jacob Zuma confirmed her appointment the following month, [3] and she joined the bench on 1 July 2013. [4] Hughes presided in Centre for Child Law v Media 24 Limited,a 2017 case concerning Zephany Nurse which later went to the Constitutional Court; [5] the Constitutional Court upheld her interpretation of the Criminal Procedure Act's requirements for protecting the anonymity of child victims. [6] Hughes also presided in prominent cases concerning the extension of the Zondo Commission [7] [8] and Nkosana Makate's protracted battle with Vodacom over compensation for the "Please Call Me" concept. While serving in Gauteng,Hughes was an acting judge in the Constitutional Division of the High Court of Lesotho in April 2015,and she was an acting judge in the Supreme Court of Appeal on two occasions between December 2017 and November 2019. [1] In the latter capacity,she wrote the Supreme Court's 2018 judgement in the matter of Director of Public Prosecutions,Grahamstown v Peli,which dealt with the adjudication of mitigating circumstances in the sentencing of rape. [11]
In February 2021,the Judicial Service Commission shortlisted Hughes for permanent appointment to one of five vacancies on the Supreme Court of Appeal. [12] The General Council of the Bar recommended against her appointment,submitting comments that were highly critical of the quality of her writing. [6] However,one of the Bar's representatives on the Judicial Service Commission,Dali Mpofu,defended Hughes during her interview in April 2021. [13] Judge President Mandisa Maya was also complimentary,telling the Commission that Hughes had maintained her work ethic as an acting Supreme Court judge even after both of her parents fell fatally ill. [14]
The Judicial Service Commission recommended Hughes for appointment. [15] She served a final acting stint on the Supreme Court in June 2021 before beginning her permanent tenure on 1 July 2021. [1]
Baaitse Elizabeth "Bess" Nkabinde-Mmono is a South African retired judge who served in the Constitutional Court of South Africa from January 2006 to December 2017. During that time,she was acting Deputy Chief Justice of South Africa from 23 May 2016 to 7 June 2017. She joined the bench in November 1999 as a judge of the Bophuthatswana Provincial Division.

She was formerly the President of the Supreme Court of Appeal from 2017 to 2022 before she was elevated to the position of Deputy Chief Justice of South Africa in September 2022. She joined the bench in May 2000 as a judge of the Transkei Division of the High Court of South Africa and was elevated to the Supreme Court of Appeal in 2006.
Xola Mlungisi Petse is a retired South African judge who was the Deputy President of the Supreme Court of Appeal between 2019 and 2024. A former attorney,he joined the Supreme Court as a puisne judge in June 2012. Before that,he was a judge of the Eastern Cape High Court from July 2005 to May 2012.
Rammaka Steven Mathopo is a judge of the Constitutional Court of South Africa. Before his elevation to that court in January 2022,he served in the Supreme Court of Appeal between June 2015 and December 2021. Zeenat Carelse is a South African judge who became the inaugural president of the Land Claims Court in 2024. She began her career as a public prosecutor and formerly served as a magistrate in Cape Town,Johannesburg,and Tembisa. She has also served lengthy acting stints in the Land Claims Court.
Yvonne Thokozile Mbatha is a South African judge of the Supreme Court of Appeal. Before her appointment to the Supreme Court,she was a judge of the KwaZulu-Natal High Court from June 2011 to June 2019. She was an acting judge in the Constitutional Court between August and December 2022.
Halima Khanam Saldulker is a South African judge of the Supreme Court of Appeal. She began her judicial career as a judge in the South Gauteng High Court from August 2004 to July 2013,when she was appointed to the Supreme Court. Before that,she practiced as an advocate in Johannesburg between 1988 and 2004.
Fayeeza Kathree-Setiloane is a South African judge of the Supreme Court of Appeal. She joined the appellate court in December 2023 after 13 years in the Gauteng High Court. Before her appointment to the bench in October 2010,she practiced as an advocate of the High Court in Johannesburg;she was involved in constitutional litigation,including through the Legal Resources Centre,and also served a stint in corporate advisory at Werksmans.

Trevor Richard Gorven is a South African retired judge who served in the Supreme Court of Appeal between July 2021 and April 2024. Before his elevation to that court,he served in the KwaZulu-Natal High Court from December 2008 to June 2021. He was formerly an advocate in Pietermaritzburg,primarily practising civil litigation,and he received silk status in 2006.
Dumisani Hamilton Zondi is a South African judge who is the Deputy President of the Supreme Court of Appeal. He was appointed as the chairperson of the Electoral Court in December 2022. Before his elevation to the Supreme Court in June 2014,he served in the Western Cape High Court between 2007 and 2014,as well as in the Competition Appeal Court between 2011 and 2014. He entered legal practice as an attorney in 1986.
Fikile Eunice Mokgohloa is a South African judge of the Supreme Court of Appeal. Before her elevation to that court in June 2019,she was a judge of the High Court of South Africa between November 2008 and May 2019. She joined the bench as a judge of the KwaZulu-Natal Division and moved to the Limpopo Division in January 2016,becoming Deputy Judge President in Limpopo in July 2016. Born in Pretoria,she began her career as an attorney in the former Transvaal.
Petrus Arnolus Koen is South African judge who is currently serving in the KwaZulu-Natal Division of the High Court of South Africa. Before joining the bench in November 2006,he was Senior Counsel in Pietermaritzburg. He is best known for presiding in the corruption trial of former president Jacob Zuma from May 2021 until he recused himself in January 2023.
Thoba Portia Poyo-Dlwati is a South African judge who is currently serving as the Judge President of the KwaZulu-Natal High Court. She joined the court as a puisne judge in June 2014 and was elevated to the judge presidency in January 2023,appointed by President Cyril Ramaphosa as the division's first female judge president.
Mahendra Ramasamy Chetty is a South African judge of the High Court of South Africa. He was appointed to the KwaZulu-Natal Division in June 2014. Before that,Chetty was an attorney for the Legal Resources Centre,where he worked between 1990 and 2014;he was the director of the centre's Durban office from 1999 onwards. He was admitted as an attorney in 1988.
Mokgere Busisiwe Shareen Masipa is a South African judge of the High Court of South Africa. She was appointed to the KwaZulu-Natal Division in July 2016 after 14 years as a practising attorney in Durban. She is an expert on labour law.
