Westside High School is a comprehensive public junior/senior high school serving grades eight through twelve in the rural, fringe portion of Jonesboro, Arkansas, United States. Located in southern Craighead County, Westside High School is one of eight public high schools in the county and is the sole high school managed by the Westside Consolidated School District. The school is alternatively referred to as Jonesboro Westside or Westside Consolidated.

Jonesboro is a city located on Crowley's Ridge in the northeastern corner of the U.S. State of Arkansas. Jonesboro is one of two county seats of Craighead County and the home of Arkansas State University. According to the 2010 Census, the city had a population of 71,551 and is the fifth-largest city in Arkansas.

Craighead County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 96,443. The county has two county seats — Jonesboro and Lake City. Craighead County is Arkansas's 58th county, formed on February 19, 1859, and named for state Senator Thomas Craighead. It is one of several dry counties within the state of Arkansas, in which the sale of alcoholic beverages is largely prohibited.

Academics

The assumed course of study at Westside High School is the Smart Core curriculum developed by the Arkansas Department of Education (ADE). Students engage in regular and Advanced Placement (AP) coursework and exams to obtain at least 24 units before graduation. Students also have the choice of participating in any of two possible concurrent courses. Exceptional students have been recognized as National Merit Finalists and participated in Arkansas Governor's School.

The Arkansas Department of Education (ADE), headquartered in Little Rock, is the state education agency of Arkansas for public schools. Founded in 1931, its responsibilities include accrediting schools, assisting Arkansas schools and their school districts in developing their curricula, approving the textbooks used in state public schools, licensing teachers, and providing continuing education programs. The ADE consists of five divisions: Division of Academic Accountability, Division of Fiscal and Administrative Services, Division of Human Resources, Division of Learning Services, and Division of Research and Technology.

Advanced Placement (AP) is a program in the United States and Canada created by the College Board which offers college-level curricula and examinations to high school students. American colleges and universities may grant placement and course credit to students who obtain high scores on the examinations. The AP curriculum for each of the various subjects is created for the College Board by a panel of experts and college-level educators in that field of study. For a high school course to have the designation, the course must be audited by the College Board to ascertain that it satisfies the AP curriculum. If the course is approved, the school may use the AP designation and the course will be publicly listed on the AP Course Ledger.

Arkansas Governors School

The Arkansas Governor's School is a publicly funded six-week residential summer program offered to rising seniors in the state of Arkansas. The school typically accepts around 400 students each year.

U.S. News & World Report is an American media company that publishes news, opinion, consumer advice, rankings, and analysis. Founded as a newsweekly magazine in 1933, U.S. News transitioned to primarily web-based publishing in 2010. U.S. News is best known today for its influential Best Colleges and Best Hospitals rankings, but it has expanded its content and product offerings in education, health, money, careers, travel, and cars. The rankings are popular in North America but have drawn widespread criticism from colleges, administrations, and students for their dubious, disparate, and arbitrary nature. The ranking system by U.S. News is usually contrasted with the Washington Monthly and Forbes rankings.

Westside is nationally ranked as No. 149 of 2,008 high schools evaluated in the 2012 Challenge Index with a 4.371 index score, which places Westside as the No. 2 ranked school within the state. [3]

The Challenge Index is a method for the statistical ranking of top public and private high schools in the United States, created by Washington Post columnist Jay Mathews. It is also the only statistical ranking system for both public and private high schools. The ranking is determined by the extent of availability of the Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate Programs in the school's curriculum and the number of graduating seniors.

Westside is associated with Cultural Academic Student Exchange (CASE) and hosts foreign exchange students almost every year from all around the world.

Extracurricular activities

The Westside High School mascot is the warrior with scarlet and white serving as the school colors. Westside provides a number of clubs and organizations that participate in extracurricular activities.

Athletics

For the 2012-2014 seasons, [5] the Westside Warriors participate in the 4A 3 Conference. Competition is primarily sanctioned by the Arkansas Activities Association with the Warriors competing in baseball, basketball (boys/girls), bowling, cheer, football, soccer (boys/girls), softball, tennis (boys/girls), track and field (boys/girls), volleyball, and Marching Band. The Arkansas Activities Association (AAA) is the primary sanctioning body for high school sports in state of Arkansas. AAA is a member association of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFSHSA). Every public secondary school in Arkansas is a de jure member of the AAA, and most private schools, save for a few schools in the delta that belong to the Mississippi Private Schools Association, are included in membership.
