"What You Waiting For" is a song released by Korean-Dutch-Canadian singer Somi. It was released by The Black Label and Interscope Records on July 22, 2020. [1]

Contents

Background and release

On July 14, 2021, The Black Label released a promotional poster for the song with the release date on it, confirming that Somi would make a surprise comeback in about a week. [2] Then, on July 15, they released the second promotional poster, also unveiling the title of the song "What You Waiting For". [3] The following day, a credits poster was unveiled revealing that Somi was involved in the songs's writing and production as well. [4] On July 18, the third promotional poster was released. [5]

On July 22, "What You Waiting For" was released. [6]

Composition

"What You Waiting For" was written by Teddy, Somi, and Danny Chung and the former two were also composed the song with R.Tee and 24. [4] As quoted from an interview, Somi told that there's no specific inspiration for the song. But it potentially might be from the wait of the late night tacos and chicken wings. [7]

As described from Jeff Benjamin of Forbes , "The just-released track opens with a subtle synth-pop production, bouncing through DIY-vibe electronica and a racing, power-pop chorus as Somi tells an apprehensive lover 'Baby, I’ve been waiting for you all this time!'". [8]

Music video

On July 17, the first music video teaser was released. [9] Three days later, the second music video teaser was released. [10] A day after, the third music video teaser was released. [11] On July 22, the music video was released. [12]

As quoted from Forbes, "The video showed Somi who looked more confident than ever embracing different looks and sides of herself as she literally breaks through barriers." [8] The video amassed over six million views in its first 24 hours of release. [13] By November 8th of 2020, the music video had gathered more then 18 million views. [14]

Commercial performance

The song peaked at number 53 on the South Korean Gaon chart becoming Somi's third highest entry on the chart. In Malaysia the song peaked at number 8 becoming her first top ten hit in the country. In Singapore the song hit number two becoming her highest-charting song there. The song also peaked at number 8 on the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart becoming her second top 10 entry on the chart.

On August 6, 2020, Somi took her first music show trophy with the song on Mnet's M Countdown. [15]

Jeon So-mi Canadian-Korean singer

Ennik Somi Douma, better known by her Korean name Jeon So-mi (Korean: 전소미) or by the mononym Somi, is a Canadian-Dutch-Korean singer-songwriter based in South Korea. Jeon shot to domestic stardom as the first place winner of the competition series Produce 101 and a member of the series' project girl group, I.O.I. Following the conclusion of I.O.I's group activities, Jeon ventured out as a solo artist. Under the The Black Label, Jeon debuted as a soloist on June 13, 2019 with the single "Birthday".

I.O.I South Korean girl group

I.O.I was a South Korean girl group formed by CJ E&M through the 2016 reality show Produce 101 on Mnet. The group was composed of eleven members chosen from a pool of 101 trainees from various entertainment companies: Yoo Yeon-jung, Lim Na-young, Kang Mi-na, Kim Do-yeon, Jung Chae-yeon, Zhou Jieqiong, Kim So-hye, Kim Chung-ha, Choi Yoo-jung, Kim Se-jeong and Jeon So-mi. They debuted on May 4, 2016 with the EP Chrysalis and actively promoted as a whole and as a sub-unit for less than a year.
