The area was first used as a camp along a cattle-driving route in the 1880s. The town grew with the arrival of the Soo Line Railroad in 1914. The line was planned for extension all the way to Glacier National Park, but work was stopped during World War I and the line never went any farther than Whitetail. At its peak the town had more than 500 residents, declining to 248 in 1940 and 125 in 1970. The town's chief industry was the manufacture of silo blowers from 1940, but the plant closed, followed by Whitetail High School in 1940 and the grade school in 1973.[3]
The small checkpoint along Montana's border with Canada, which served about three travelers every day, was set to receive $15 million for upgrades under President Barack Obama's economic stimulus plan. On April 1, 2011, Canada closed its border to northbound traffic through Whitetail. The US followed suit and closed the southbound crossing on January 25, 2013.[4]

Highway 34 is a paved, undivided provincial highway in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. It runs from Highway 13 about 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) west of Ogema south to the US border. Highway 34 is in the south-central part of Saskatchewan and travels through a geographical area of rugged badlands, rolling hills, and open prairie. It is about 62 kilometres (39 mi) long.
Girvin is a former village of 20 people in Saskatchewan, Canada. It is located midway between Regina and Saskatoon on Highway 11 between the towns of Davidson and Craik. The village was formally dissolved in 2005; its remaining population is now counted as part of the rural municipality of Arm River.
Raymond is an unincorporated hamlet in Sheridan County, Montana, United States. The community lies north of Plentywood. It is nine miles south of the Canada–US border.
Big Beaver is an organized hamlet in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. It is situated at the junction of Highways 18 and 34 in the Rural Municipality of Happy Valley No. 10. North of Big Beaver along Highway 34 is the Big Muddy Badlands. South of town, at the end of Highway 34, is the now closed US border crossing of Big Beaver. The port was closed to northbound traffic in 2011 and to southbound traffic in 2013.
Weirdale is a village in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan within the Rural Municipality of Garden River No. 490 and Census Division No. 15. Weirdale is about 48 km northeast of the City of Prince Albert along Highway 55.
Opheim Air Force Station is a closed United States Air Force General Surveillance Radar station. It is located 3.3 miles (5.3 km) west of Opheim, Montana. It was closed in 1979.
