WizFolio was a web-based reference management software for researchers to manage, share their research and academic papers and generate citations in scholarly writings. It used plug-ins (HTML parsing technology) to collect bibliographic information, videos and patents [1] [2] from webpages. WizFolio ceased to be available at the end of 2017. [3]

History

Developed by WizPatent Pte Ltd, its alpha version was launched on 12 May 2008, and the beta on 22 June 2008. It has since been released officially and is opened to the general public. [4] During the 8th International Conference on Bioinformatics (InCOB), Lim Chuan Poh, chairman of Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) announced that the Asia-Pacific Bioinformatics Network (APBioNet) and Association for Medical and Bio Informatics Singapore (AMBIS) signed an agreement with WizFolio to provide respective members access to the system as well as explore new ways to improve the process of scientific peer review activities. [5]

In January 2015, Wizfolio was acquired by iGroup (Asia Pacific) Ltd. [6]

In March 2016, iGroup (Asia Pacific) Ltd. released EEWOWW, a new authoring tool built upon on Wizfolio. [3] Wizfolio was retired at end of 2017.

iPad version

The company announced the release of its iPad version on 26 July 2010. [8] [9]

Compatibility with word processors

WizCite, the system's citation tool, is compatible with Microsoft Word (Windows), OpenOffice.org (Windows, Mac, Linux), and Zoho Writer. [2] [10] [11]

WizFolio used to be compatible with Google Docs until 12 April 2010 when Google Docs update broke the integration.

Trial with Scholars Portal

Scholars Portal, a consortium of 21 university libraries in Canada, [12] began a trial of the system in early 2010. [13]

Zotero Reference management software

Zotero is a free and open-source reference management software to manage bibliographic data and related research materials. Features include web browser integration, online syncing, generation of in-text citations, footnotes, and bibliographies, an integrated PDF reader and note editor, as well as integration with the word processors Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, and Google Docs. It was originally created at the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University, and as of 2021 is developed by the non-profit Corporation for Digital Scholarship.

CLC bio

CLC bio was a bioinformatics software company headquartered in Aarhus, Denmark, and with offices in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Tokyo, Taipei and Delhi. CLC bio's software has more than 250,000 users in more than 100 countries around the globe. CLC bio was acquired by QIAGEN in 2013, and continues to exist as a part of QIAGEN Digital Insights, the bioinformatics research and development division of QIAGEN.

Gajendra Pal Singh Raghava is an Indian bio-informatician and head of computational biology at the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology.

Etherpad Open-source web-based collaborative real-time editor

Etherpad is an open-source, web-based collaborative real-time editor, allowing authors to simultaneously edit a text document, and see all of the participants' edits in real-time, with the ability to display each author's text in their own color. There is also a chat box in the sidebar to allow meta communication.

Wikindx is a free bibliographic and quotations/notes management and article authoring system designed either for single use or multi-user collaborative use across the internet. Wikindx falls within the category of reference management software, but also provides functionality to write notes and entire papers. Developed under the GNU GPL license, the project homepage can be found at sourceforge.net and the required files/updates are available for download there.

Wil van der Aalst Dutch computer scientist and professor

Willibrordus Martinus Pancratius van der Aalst is a Dutch computer scientist and full professor at RWTH Aachen University, leading the Process and Data Science (PADS) group. His research and teaching interests include information systems, workflow management, Petri nets, process mining, specification languages, and simulation. He is also known for his work on workflow patterns.

Dotmatics is an R&D scientific software company used by scientists in the R&D process that help them be more efficient in their efforts to innovate. Founded in 2005, the company's primary office is in Boston with 14 offices around the globe. In March 2021, Dotmatics joined forces with Insightful Science through a merger. In April 2022, the two companies consolidated under the Dotmatics brand. Dotmatics' software is used by 2 million scientists and researchers and 10,000 customers.

ReadCube is a technology company developing software for researchers, publishers, academic and commercial organizations. ReadCube’s product line includes the reference manager ReadCube Papers, Anywhere Access and custom services for publishers. It is part of the Digital Science's portfolio.

Google Slides Cloud-based presentation software

Google Slides is a presentation program included as part of the free, web-based Google Docs Editors suite offered by Google. The service also includes: Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Drawings, Google Forms, Google Sites and Google Keep. Google Slides is available as a web application, mobile app for: Android, iOS, Microsoft Windows, BlackBerry OS and as a desktop application on Google's Chrome OS. The app is compatible with Microsoft PowerPoint file formats. The app allows users to create and edit files online while collaborating with other users in real-time. Edits are tracked by user with a revision history presenting changes. An editor's position is highlighted with an editor-specific color and cursor and a permissions system regulates what users can do. Updates have introduced features using machine learning, including "Explore", offering suggested layouts and images for presentations and "Action items", allowing users to assign tasks to other users.

colwiz

colwiz is a free web, desktop and mobile based research management software, designed by researchers from the University of Oxford. colwiz incorporates reference management, collaboration and networking tools, as well as productivity features.

Paperpile

Paperpile is a web-based commercial reference management software, with special emphasis on integration with Google Docs and Google Scholar. Parts of Paperpile are implemented as a Google Chrome browser extension. It was founded in 2012, and is produced by Paperpile LLC.

Google Docs Cloud-based word processing software

Google Docs is an online word processor included as part of the free, web-based Google Docs Editors suite offered by Google, which also includes: Google Sheets, Google Slides, Google Drawings, Google Forms, Google Sites and Google Keep. Google Docs is accessible via an internet browser as a web-based application and is also available as a mobile app on Android and iOS and as a desktop application on Google's Chrome OS.

RefME

RefME was a free citation management tool available on web, iOS and Android. It offered a functionality that allowed users to scan book and journal barcodes with a mobile device and generate citations automatically. It was compatible with other citation management tools such as Mendeley, Zotero, RefWorks, and EndNote and enables exporting in over 7000 citation styles. In May 2015, the company released a Chrome plug-in to allow for direct clipping of web sources, which was followed in August 2015 by a similar iOS extension. RefME was shut down on March 7, 2017, after being acquired by the education company Chegg, Inc.
