The Sussex Wildlife Trust (SWT) is a conservation charity which aims to protect natural life in Sussex. It was founded in 1961 and is one of 46 wildlife trusts across the UK and the Isle of Man and Alderney. As of 2024, it had 38,000 members and manages 2,000 hectares of land for nature. It is a registered charity and in the year to 31 March 2019 it had an income of £5.7 million and expenditure of £4 million, resulting in net income of £1.7 million.
Pagham Harbour is a 629-hectare (1,550-acre) biological and geological Site of Special Scientific Interest on the western outskirts of Bognor Regis in West Sussex. It is a Geological Conservation Review site, a Nature Conservation Review site, a Ramsar site, a Special Protection Area and a Marine Conservation Zone. An area of 599.1 hectares is a RSPB Local Nature Reserve.
Lewes Downs is a 165-hectare (410-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest east of Lewes in East Sussex. It is a Nature Conservation Review site, Grade I and a Special Area of Conservation. Part of it is a national nature reserve, part is Malling Down nature reserve, which is managed by the Sussex Wildlife Trust, and part is Mount Caburn, an Iron Age hill fort which is a Scheduled Monument.
Marline Valley Woods is a 55.1-hectare (136-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest on the western outskirts of Hastings in East Sussex. An area of 40.3 hectares is a Local Nature Reserve owned by Hastings Borough Council and managed by the Sussex Wildlife Trust.
Haymill Valley is a 7.8-hectare (19-acre) Local Nature Reserve in Slough in Berkshire. It is owned by Slough Borough Council and managed by the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust. The site is known locally as The Millie.
Filsham Reedbed is an 18.5-hectare (46-acre) Local Nature Reserve on the western outskirts of St Leonards-on-Sea in East Sussex. It is owned by Hastings Borough Council and managed by Sussex Wildlife Trust. It is part of Combe Haven Site of Special Scientific Interest.
Rye Harbour LNR is a 325.4-hectare (804-acre) local nature reserve in Rye in East Sussex. The site is part of the 465-hectare (1,150-acre) nature reserve managed by the Sussex Wildlife Trust. It is also part of Dungeness, Romney Marsh and Rye Bay Ramsar site, Special Protection Area and Site of Special Scientific Interest and Dungeness Special Area of Conservation.
Seaford Head is a 150.2-hectare (371-acre) Local Nature Reserve east of Seaford in East Sussex. It is part of Seaford to Beachy Head Site of Special Scientific Interest. An area of 83 hectares is owned by Seaford Town Council and managed by the Sussex Wildlife Trust. The rest is divided between Seven Sisters Country Park, which is owned and managed by East Sussex County Council, and an area owned by the National Trust.
Withdean and Westdene Woods is a 7.9-hectare (20-acre) Local Nature Reserve in four separate areas in Brighton in East Sussex. Most of the site is owned and managed by Brighton and Hove City Council. Withdean Woods is a 1-hectare (2.5-acre) nature reserve managed by the Sussex Wildlife Trust.
Burton Park SSSI is a 57.7-hectare (143-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest west of Pulborough in West Sussex. A larger area of 63 hectares, including Chingford Pond to the west, is designated a Local Nature Reserve called Burton and Chingford Ponds, which is managed by the Sussex Wildlife Trust and West Sussex County Council. The site is adjacent to Burton Park, a Grade I listed building.
The Mens is a 205.2-hectare (507-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest west of Billingshurst in West Sussex. It is a Nature Conservation Review site, Grade I and a Special Area of Conservation. An area of 166 hectares south of the A272 road is managed as a nature reserve by the Sussex Wildlife Trust.
Bedelands Farm Nature Reserve is a 35.2-hectare (87-acre) Local Nature Reserve on the northern outskirts of Burgess Hill in West Sussex. It is owned and managed by Mid Sussex District Council. It site within the parish of Ansty and Staplefield. Since 1994, in consultation with the District Council and the University of Sussex, the Friends group have managing the area and for conservation of the flora and fauna and the public’s enjoyment. The Nature Reserve is a Site of Nature Conservation Importance (SNCI) and treasured by the local community. The richness of the area for wildlife is under threat by the encroaching housing developments of the Northern Arc and the pressures dog walking and other activities local housing will bear on the area.
Flatropers Wood is a 38-hectare (94-acre) nature reserve in Rye in East Sussex. It is managed by the Sussex Wildlife Trust.
Gillham Wood is a 3-hectare (7.4-acre) nature reserve west of Bexhill-on-Sea in East Sussex. It is managed by the Sussex Wildlife Trust.
Graffham Common is a 38-hectare (94-acre) nature reserve between Midhurst and Petworth in West Sussex. It is owned and managed by the Sussex Wildlife Trust.
Malling Down is an 85-hectare (210-acre) nature reserve on the eastern outskirts of Lewes in East Sussex. It is managed by the Sussex Wildlife Trust. It is part of Lewes Downs, which is a Nature Conservation Review site, Grade I. Special Area of Conservation and Site of Special Scientific Interest.
Selwyns Wood is a 11-hectare (27-acre) nature reserve west of Heathfield in Sussex. It is managed by the Sussex Wildlife Trust.
Southerham Farm is a 131-hectare (320-acre) nature reserve on the eastern outskirts of Lewes in East Sussex. It is managed by the Sussex Wildlife Trust.
