World Business is a weekly half hour features programme on CNBC presented by Raya Abirached, broadcast between 2006 and 2011. The show covers recent trends in global business, technology, luxury markets and the business of sport. The programme aired in Europe on Friday nights and in Asia on Saturday mornings. [1]
World Business was cancelled after it was revealed that the show's production company was doubling as a public relations firm for Malaysian politicians, including Sarawak Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud. [1] [2] The Sarawak Report , a blog run by Clare Rewcastle Brown, reported that FBC Media had been receiving payments from Malaysian politicians in return for positive coverage, including carrying puff pieces on the programme to improve Taib's international image. The Penan are a nomadic indigenous people living in Sarawak and Brunei, although there is only one small community in Brunei; among those in Brunei half have been converted to Islam, even if only superficially. Penan are one of the last such peoples remaining as hunters and gatherers. The Penan are noted for their practice of 'molong' which means never taking more than necessary. Most Penan were nomadic hunter-gatherers until the post-World War II missionaries settled many of the Penan, mainly in the Ulu-Baram district but also in the Limbang district. They eat plants, which are also used as medicines, and animals and use the hides, skin, fur, and other parts for clothing and shelter.

Tun Datuk Patinggi Haji Abdul Rahman bin Ya'kub was a Malaysian politician of Melanau descent from Mukah. He was the third Chief Minister of Sarawak and the fourth Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak. He is also an uncle of Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, since his (Taib's) mother Hajah Hamidah Ya'akub was his (Rahman's) eldest-born sibling.
The ninth Sarawak state election was held on Saturday, 20 May 2006 with nomination day on Tuesday, 9 May 2006. The election functioned to elect 71 representatives to the Sarawak State Assembly. Dato' Sri Sulaiman Abdul Rahman bin Abdul Taib is a former Deputy Minister of Tourism of Malaysia. He is the 3rd son of Abdul Taib Mahmud who is the current Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak while his mother was the late Laila Taib. Sulaiman wed 20-year-old Anisa, daughter of the former Deputy Chief Minister of Sarawak George Chan Hong Nam.
Abdul Taib bin Mahmud is a Malaysian politician who has served as the 7th Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Sarawak since March 2014. He served as the 4th Chief Minister of Sarawak for 33 years, from March 1981 to February 2014, making him the longest-serving head of government of a Malaysian state. He served as President of the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), which was part of the Barisan Nasional coalition until 2018. He is of ethnic Melanau descent.

The tenth Sarawak state election was held on Saturday, 16 April 2011 after nomination for candidates on Wednesday, 6 April 2011. The purpose of the election was to elect 71 representatives to the Sarawak State Assembly. The ninth state assembly was dissolved by Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak, Tun Abang Muhammad Salahuddin Abang Barieng on the advice of Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud on 21 March 2011. Clare Rewcastle Brown is a British environmental and anti-corruption activist, author, blogger and advocate journalist. Born in the former British Crown Colony of Sarawak, she is the founder and operator of the Sarawak Report blog and pirate radio station Radio Free Sarawak which are openly critical of the Barisan Nasional-led state and federal governments of Sarawak and Malaysia. In 2017, her blog Sarawak Report gained wide recognition for its original and early exposure of the 1Malaysia Development Berhad scandal.
Radio Free Sarawak is a pirate radio station established by environmental and anti-corruption activist Clare Rewcastle Brown and helmed by former Cats FM presenter Peter John Jaban, Christina Suntai who graduated from Florida Technical College in computer science and computer programming, and Michael Ngau. First broadcast on 16 November 2010, the station can be received by shortwave on 15420 kHz. It also produced podcasts for its programmes daily from 1100–1300 UTC or 7:00–9:00 pm at Sarawak local time (UTC+8). The station received wide publicity in Malaysia after the brief disappearance of Jaban. However it was later discovered that he had gone into hiding voluntarily. On 15 November 2014, the radio suspended its shortwave transmission services and claimed the Sarawak state government has jammed its service.
Sarawak Report is an opinion, commentary, and political activism blog focused on environmental and corruption issues in Malaysia. It has been largely self-published and operated from London since 2010 by Clare Rewcastle Brown. The blog had originally focused on the welfare of the indigenous people in Sarawak but eventually published original exposés on corruption scandals in wider Malaysia. In 2017, it gained wide recognition for its original and early exposure of the 1Malaysia Development Berhad scandal, which had led the Najib Razak-led Malaysian government to block the website. The blog is openly critical of the Barisan Nasional-led state and federal governments of Sarawak and Malaysia, and supportive of the Pakatan Harapan opposition.
FBC Media Limited is a media and public relations company based in London currently under administration. It specializes in television content creation, production and distribution and global communication campaigns on behalf of governments, non-governmental organizations and other companies. FBC was incorporated in 1998 and had offices in London, Mumbai and Rome. Among its key figures were its founder and chairman, Alan Friedman, and president John Defterios, currently a presenter on CNN.
A by-election was held for the Sarawak State Assembly seat of Balingian on 29 March 2014 following the nomination day on 17 March 2014. The incumbent assemblyman and former 33-year Chief Minister, Abdul Taib Mahmud resigned from his post on 28 February 2014. The seat was declared vacant after he took his seat as the new Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Sarawak, succeeding Abang Muhammad Salahuddin whose term ended on 28 February. Taib was an assemblyman from the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu, a component party of Barisan Nasional. The former chairman of the party, he won by a majority of 5,154 votes against 2 other candidates in the 2011 election.
The Ming Court Affair was a political coup in Sarawak, Malaysia that began in 1983, developed into a full-blown political crisis during 1987 state election, and ended after the Sarawak Malaysian People's Association (PERMAS) was dissolved in 1991. This political crisis mainly involved in the dispute between Abdul Rahman Ya'kub and his nephew Abdul Taib Mahmud over the control of the state government and Sarawak's natural resources.
Tan Sri Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Abang Haji Openg, familiarly known as Abang Johari or Abang Jo, is a Malaysian politician who has served as the first Premier of Sarawak since March 2022 and Member of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Gedong since December 2021. He served as the sixth and last Chief Minister of Sarawak from January 2017 before the title was changed to premier in March 2022. He was also the MLA for Satok from May 1981 to December 2021. He is now the longest-serving MLA by having served since 1981 for 41 years as of 2022.
Larry Sng Wei Shien, is a Malaysian politician who has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Julau since May 2018. He served as Member of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Pelagus from September 2001 to April 2011. He is a member of the Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM). In PBM, he has served as President since January 2022 and served as Deputy President from November 2021 to January 2022. He was a member, State Chairman of Sarawak for the People's Justice Party (PKR), a component party of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) opposition coalition. On 28 February 2021, he left PKR to become an independent again and declared support for the ruling Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition. On 21 November 2021, he was declared Deputy President of a new party, PBM. On 8 January 2022, he was declared President of PBM.
Dato Hanifah Hajar Taib also known as Hanifah Hajar Taib-Alsree is a Malaysian politician and businesswoman who has served as the Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department in charge of Sabah and Sarawak Affairs for the second term in the Barisan Nasional (BN) administration under Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Minister Maximus Ongkili since August 2021. She served her first term in the Perikatan Nasional (PN) administration under former Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and Minister Maximus Ongkili from March 2020 to August 2021 and Member of Parliament (MP) for Mukah since May 2018. She is a member of the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), a component party of the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition which is aligned with the PN coalition and a former component party of the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition.
