World Record is the second studio album by British rock band Lower Than Atlantis.
Partway through the touring cycle for their Bretton (2008) EP, Lower Than Atlantis had several line-up changes. [6] While writing songs for their debut album, Far Q (2010), the band's drummer left. [7] They soon thought about drummer Eddy Thrower from We Stare at Mirrors, who the band had previously toured with, and called him, asking if he would like to partake in a practice session. [7] Duce explained that the band "never worked with a good drummer before. [With Thrower,] [i]t was... nice." [7] Shortly after the release of Far Q, We Stare at Mirrors bassist Declan Hart joined the band. [7]
Following this, the band toured the UK as part of Rock Sound Presents... Powered by Fender tour in September and October, alongside Architects, Norma Jean and Devil Sold His Soul. [8] Rock Sound predicted the band's popularity would increase following the tour. [9] The band recorded World Record at Outhouse Studios in Reading in October. Ben Humphreys helped with recording and engineering. [10] On Far Q, Thrower used a double bass pedal for a lot of fills. For the World Record, he used one bass pedal, and crash and ride cymbals. [11] Mat Rider of The Holiday Plan contributes guest vocals on "Marilyn's Mansion". Thrower's dad John plays trumpet on "Another Sad Song". The recordings were mixed by John Mitchell, and then mastered by Alan Douches at West West Side in New York in November. [10]
All of the songs on World Record were written by vocalist/guitarist Mike Duce, [7] but were credited to the band as a whole. [10] Duce considers the album "a big of a gamble" as the band created something they wanted to hear but at the same time they thought it would alienate the fans that enjoyed the fast-paced material found on Far Q. [12] [13] It had a more alternative rock sound influenced by Foo Fighters and Jimmy Eat World. [14] This was something that Duce claimed no one else in the current music scene was doing. [15] Duce also claimed that there might be "more albums sounding a bit like this afterwards..." [15] The band were going for a bigger sound, compared to Far Q, as that half of that album has "blink-and-you'll-miss-it" moments, according to Duce. [15]
"(Motor) Way of Life" is the band's view of life as a touring band. [16] "Beech Like the Tree" is about Duce's friend Josh who models for a living. [16] "High at Five" is about Duce's "overactive brain" – Duce would over think things and usually end in having panic attacks. [16] "Uni 9MM" is about how the band envies their friends who graduated university, got jobs, etc. [16] The band is "truly grateful that we get to do what we do but there's always that 'what if'?" [16] "Another Sad Song" is about "Me being me", according to Duce. [16] "Marilyn's Mansion" is about when Duce was younger, he would make dens in a forest where he would feel "safe". [16] He wished that he had a similar sanctuary these days. [16] "Deadliest Catch" is "about a girl! I won't bore you with gory details", according to Duce. [16]
Duce had a fling with a female bassist in another band but she led Duce on, causing him to write "Bug". [16] "Bug" was his nickname for the girl. [16] "Up in Smoke" is about the fact Duce has smoked since he was 11/12 years old and is constantly trying to quit. [16] "Could You? Would You?" is about Duce's friend's girlfriend. [16] She would treat Duce's friend "like crap and I hate her". [16] "Working for the Man by Day, Stickin' It to the Man by Night" is about Duce's old job as a labourer for a bricklayer when he was 16. [16] Duce admitted that he tried to emanate the message of "Hey man, it's ok. We all go through some shitty experiences at work" through the lyrics. [16] "R.O.I." is about where Duce's family originated from in Ireland and how Duce is unable to visit due to his schedule. [16]
On 3 November 2010, the band announced that their new album would be titled World Record and was due for release early next year. [17] The band went on a European tour in November and December, alongside The Ghost Inside, For the Fallen Dreams and Suffokate. [18] On 12 January 2011, a music video was released for "Beech Like the Tree". [19] Three days later, the album's track listing was revealed. [20] On 18 January, the album's artwork was released, [21] which was designed by Paul Jackson. [10] On 8 February, it was announced the band had signed to Sumerian Records for North America. [22] Sumerian founder Ash Avildsen said that the band were, after listing hardcore/punk bands At the Drive-In, Refused and Fugazi, a "fresh hope for a true blue-collar DIY punk rock band" bringing the "same spirit to the scene." [22] "Beech Like the Tree" was released as single, with "Grounded" as the B-side, on 14 February. [23] The band played a series of shows from 18 February until 10 March, [24] before joining The Reckless and Relentless Tour supporting Asking Alexandria throughout March and April. [25]
On 28 March, "Uni 9MM" was made available for streaming via Alternative Press . [26] A couple of days later, a music video was released for "Deadliest Catch". [27] It switches between the band playing and fan submissions. The band's scenes were filmed by the Brighton seafront. [28] The band included fan-produced content due to having trouble filming the video's original concept. [29] "Up in Smoke" was premiered via Noisecreep on 12 April. [30] "Deadliest Catch" was released as a single, "Beside Myself" as the B-side, on 18 April. [31] World Record was made available for streaming on 18 April through the group's Myspace profile. [32] A double-disc edition contained World Record and their previous album Far Q (2010) was released the following day [33] in the US. [30] [34] "Live by the Remote", "Grounded" and "Beside Myself" are tacked onto the end of World Record as bonus tracks. [4] After being pushed back from its 4 April release date, [35] World Record was released in the UK through A Wolf at Your Door Records on 25 April. [36]
In late April and early May, the band supported We Are the Ocean in the UK. [37] At the end of May, the band appeared at the Slam Dunk Festival. [38] The band toured the UK in June, with Futures as the support act [39] and performed at the Download Festival. [40] A music video was released for "(Motor) Way of Life" on 11 June. [41] It was released as a single on 20 June with "Live by the Remote" as the B-side. [42] In July, the band performed at the Sonisphere Festival [43] and played their first London headlining show. [44] Following this, the group played at the Hevy Festival in August [45] and Butserfest in September. [46] In October, the band supported You Me at Six on their tour of the UK. [47] Later that month, the band performed for BBC Radio 1's Radio One Rocks event. [48] In November, the band toured the US with Close Your Eyes. [49] The band then supported Norma Jean from late November to mid December in the US [50] on the Pizza Riot 2011 Tour. [51] The band went on their first headlining UK tour in January 2012 with support acts Sights and Sounds and Marines. [52] The band supported Young Guns in Europe in February and March. [53]
As part of their 2019 3-date farewell tour, the band released 300 limited edition vinyl pressings of the album (100 per night).

AbsolutePunk staff member Kelly Doherty called World Record an album that would "win [over] the mainstream" and drop "the hardcore". [3] It mixes "memorable hooks" with alternative rock. [3] Doherty noted that the album "is the sound of a young band on the verge of something brilliant." [3] Doherty said the first half sounded "so promising", compared to the second half which is "[a let] down." [3] Reviewing the album for Allmusic, William Ruhlmann proclaimed the band were "more musically ambitious" on this album. [4] Ruhlmann said the band "stops and starts its rhythms" with Duce's "expressions." [4] Ruhlmann claimed the album was more of a melodic hard rock released, compared to their previous album Far Q. [4] BBC Music reviewer Raziq Rauf said the album shows the band moving to a "grungier sound, with even cleaner vocals." [36] Rauf noted one "major criticism" with album – "slightly one-paced." [36] Despite there being "little in the way of variety" Rauf found "very little poor content" on the album. [36]

Rock Sound is a British magazine that covers rock music. The magazine aims at being more "underground" and less commercial, while also giving coverage to better-known acts. It generally focuses on pop punk, post-hardcore, metalcore, punk, emo, hardcore, heavy metal and extreme metal genres of rock music, rarely covering indie rock music at all. The tag-line "For those who like their music loud, extreme and non-conformist" is sometimes used. Although primarily aimed at the British market, the magazine is also sold in Australia, Canada and the United States.

Architects are a British metalcore band from Brighton, East Sussex, formed in 2004 by twin brothers Dan and Tom Searle. The band now consists of Dan Searle on drums, Sam Carter on vocals, Alex Dean on bass, and Adam Christianson on guitar. They have been signed to Epitaph Records since 2013.
Your Demise was a British hardcore punk band from St Albans, England, formed in 2003. They shared stages and toured worldwide with the likes of Comeback Kid, Basement, Trapped Under Ice, Man Overboard, Enter Shikari, Parkway Drive, A Day to Remember and Bring Me the Horizon. On 22 September 2008, the band confirmed that they had signed a deal with Visible Noise. The band played their final gig at The London Underworld on 15 March 2014, after announcing in 2013 that they would be parting ways in March. They reunited for a one-off benefit show for The Ghost Inside in 2015. They reunited again for the anniversary of The Kids We Used to Be, but the shows were postponed due to the COVID-19 situation.
Hold Me Down is the second studio album by English rock band You Me at Six, released on 11 January 2010 through Virgin Records as the follow-up to 2008's Take Off Your Colours. It is the band's first release on the major label Virgin Records. Like their debut album, the album was once again Centropy produced and engineered by John Mitchell and Matt O'Grady. "The Consequence" was made available for free digital download before the first single, "Underdog" preceded the album's release. Despite receiving mixed reviews, Hold Me Down was a commercial success and debuted at No. 5 on the UK Albums Chart and is certified Gold in the UK for 100,000 shipments of copies.
Young Guns are an English alternative rock band from High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. The members, working with each other in various musical interests throughout the 2000s, formally formed the band in 2008, and rose to prominence after their debut EP, Mirrors, earned them spots opening live shows for Bon Jovi and Guns N' Roses. Their debut album, All Our Kings Are Dead, on 12 July 2010. Their second album, Bones, was released in February 2012. Their single "Bones" reached no. 1 on the Billboard Active Rock charts in the US in May 2013. Their third album, Ones and Zeros, was released on 9 June 2015. The band's fourth album, Echoes, was released on 16 September 2016.
Sleeping with Sirens is an American rock band from Orlando, Florida, currently residing in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The band currently consists of Kellin Quinn, touring lead guitarist Tony Pizzuti, Nick Martin, Justin Hills and Matty Best. The band was formed in 2009 by members of For All We Know and Paddock Park. The group is currently signed to Sumerian Records and have released seven full-length albums and an acoustic EP.
Lower Than Atlantis were an English rock band from Watford, Hertfordshire. They formed in 2007 as a hardcore punk band and gradually shifted into a melodic rock sound over five studio albums, their last being 2017's Safe in Sound. The band consisted of vocalist, guitarist and songwriter Mike Duce, bassist Declan Hart, drummer Eddy Thrower, and guitarist Ben Sansom. They announced in December 2018 that they would be disbanding after a final 3 tour dates in 2019.
Don Broco are a British rock band formed in Bedford, England, in 2008. The band consists of Rob Damiani, Simon Delaney (guitar), Tom Doyle and Matt Donnelly. The band have released four studio albums, including Priorities (2012), Automatic (2015) and Technology (2018). Sinners Never Sleep is the third studio album by English rock band You Me at Six. It was released on 3 October 2011 through Virgin Records. While touring in support of their second studio album Hold Me Down (2010), the band wrote slow-tempo material and heavy-sounding songs. Between March and May 2011, they recorded with producer Garth Richardson at Sunset Sound and The Sound Factory in Los Angeles, California. Partway through the process, vocalist Josh Franceschi suffered a panic attack, which resulted in him being hospitalized and the band losing time in the studio. Described as an alternative rock and pop rock album, Sinners Never Sleep was a departure from the pop punk sound of their previous releases.

Far Q is the debut studio album by British rock band Lower Than Atlantis. Following multiple line-up changes, the band gained drummer Eddy Thrower before starting work on Far Q. The album was recorded above a printing factory in Hertfordshire between September and November 2009 with producer Daniel Lancaster. "Taping Songs Off the Radio" was released as a single in early March 2010 with Far Q following later that month. It was released through A Wolf at Your Door Records. A vinyl edition was released by German label Redfield. The album was critically lauded upon release. "Far Q" was released as a single in mid-July. In September and October, the band toured the UK on the Rock Sound Presents... Powered by Fender with Architects, Norma Jean and Devil Sold His Soul.
Changing Tune is the third studio album and major label debut by English rock band Lower Than Atlantis. Preceded by the non-album single "If the World Was to End", the band went on their first ever headlining tour in the UK in January 2012.

Lower Than Atlantis is the fourth studio album by British rock band Lower Than Atlantis. With the release of Changing Tune (2012), the band moved to an arena rock-orientated sound. Following the touring cycle for Changing Tune, Island Records gave the band an ultimatum. The result of which ended with the band taking a label advance and building their own recording studio in Watford in July 2013. Discussing new material, vocalist/guitarist Mike Duce called the lyrics "quite vague" compared to his previous autobiographical work. Bassist Declan Hart listed Pantera, C2C and The 1975, among others, as influences for the album. Recording was done with producer Dan Lancaster over the course of "seven or eight months". Lancaster constantly pushed the band to get the best take. The band soon moved to Peter Miles' studio in Devon to record drum tracks.

Safe in Sound is the fifth and final studio album by British rock band Lower Than Atlantis, released on February 13 2017. Following the release of Changing Tune (2012), Island Records were streamlining and dropping artists who were underselling. Despite the album underselling, the group couldn't be dropped as the label had picked the option for their next album. The label offered the band the chance to take an advance and leave, which they subsequently did to build a personal studio. Here, the group worked on their next album, Lower Than Atlantis, which was released through Sony Music and supported by successful tours. In early 2015, the band were having discussions with Sony about their next album.
Palaye Royale is an American rock band from Las Vegas, formed in 2008 by brothers Remington Leith, Sebastian Danzig, and Emerson Barrett. Formed under the name Kropp Circle, the band released one EP and two singles before changing their name to Palaye Royale in 2011. Under this name, they have released five full length albums and four EPs through Sumerian Records.
