Wrestling at the Friendship Games was contested in three disciplines: freestyle, Greco-Roman and sambo wrestling. Freestyle events took place at the Winter Sports Palace in Sofia, Bulgaria between 20 July and 22 July 1984 (with 80 competitors in 10 events). Greco-Roman events were contested at the Budapest Sportcsarnok in Budapest, Hungary between 13 and 15 July 1984 (with 61 competitors in 10 events). Sambo took part in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia between 1 and 2 September 1984. [1]

Wrestling at the 2004 Summer Olympics took place in the Ano Liosia Olympic Hall and was split into two disciplines, Freestyle and Greco-Roman which are further divided into different weight categories. Men competed in both disciplines whereas women only took part in the Freestyle event with 18 gold medals being contested in all. This was the first Olympic Games that included women's wrestling events on the program.
Sambo is a martial art with Soviet origins, an internationally practiced combat sport, and a recognized style of amateur wrestling included by UWW in the World Wrestling Championships along with Greco-Roman wrestling and freestyle wrestling.

Mark Berger is a Ukrainian-born Canadian judoka. He won the gold medal in the men's heavyweight judo event at the 1983 Pan American Games and a bronze medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics. He also competed in sambo, winning silver at the 1988 World Championships.

The European Sambo Championships is the main sambo championships in Europe, organized by the European Sambo Federation. The first championship was held in 1972 in Riga. Ukraine plans to boycott the 2022 European Sambo Championships because Russian and Belarusian athletes will be allowed to compete with neutral status. Unlike most international federations, the International Sambo Federation (FIAS) has not banned Russian and Belarusians in response to the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Garry Kallos is a Canadian former wrestler who competed in the 1984 Summer Olympics and won five gold medals at the Maccabiah Games in Israel, and sambo competitor who won a gold medal at the Pan American Games.
Dashgombyn Battulga is a Mongolian judoka and sambist. He competed in the men's extra-lightweight event at the 1992 Summer Olympics. He won silver at the 1989 Sambo World Cup, along with bronze at the 1988 World Sambo Championships and 1989 World Judo Championships.
Ivan Netov is a Bulgarian sambist and judoka. In sambo, Netov is a multiple-time medalist at the World and European Championships, winning gold at both in 1995. In judo, he won bronze at the 1992 European Championships and competed at the Summer Olympics in 1992 and 1996.
Nanzadyn Büregdaa is a Mongolian wrestler. He competed in the men's freestyle 52 kg at the 1980 Summer Olympics, placing sixth. He won gold in sambo at the 1982 World Championships and Friendship Games in 1984.
