Xavier Jamar Gipson (born March 8, 2001) is an American football wide receiver for the New York Jets of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Stephen F. Austin.

Early years

Gipson grew up in Dallas, Texas and attended Woodrow Wilson High School. He was a four-year starter on the football team at cornerback and also began playing wide receiver during his senior season. [1] Gipson initially committed to play college football at Southern Methodist University as a cornerback. [2] He later flipped his commitment to Stephen F. Austin State University (SFA), who recruited him to play on offense. [3]

College career

Gipson played college football for the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks for four seasons. He caught 52 passes for 934 yards and seven touchdowns and was named second-team All-Southland Conference during his freshman season. [4] Gipson was named first-team All-Southland after finishing his sophomore season with 52 receptions for 841 yards and nine touchdowns. [5] He was named the Offensive Player of the Year of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC), SFA's new conference, after catching 74 passes for 1,367 yards and 14 touchdowns as a junior. [6] [7] Gipson repeated as the WAC Offensive Player of the Year as a senior. [8]

The New York Jets signed Gipson as an undrafted free agent on May 5, 2023. [10]

In the first game of his NFL career, a Week 1 Monday Night Football matchup against the Buffalo Bills, he returned a punt 65 yards in overtime to score the game-winning touchdown. The NFL later named him AFC Special Teams Player of the Week. [11] [12]

Recent renovations to the area include a sports medicine and academic center addition to the field house that houses the new athletic training program and the installation of a new artificial turf surface provided by a donation from a former Lumberjack football letterman. A state of the art video board with replay screen was completed in September 2016, home to largest video board in the South land Conference.

Austin teams participate in the Division I as a member of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC), having joined that conference on July 1, 2021, leaving the Southland Conference. The UAC, newly formed for the 2023 season, is a merger of the football leagues of SFA's primary home of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) and the ASUN Conference. The 2015 Sam Houston State Bearkats football team represented Sam Houston State University in the 2015 NCAA Division I FCS football season. The Bearkats were led by second-year head coach K. C. Keeler and played their home games at Bowers Stadium. They were a member of the Southland Conference. They finished the season 11–4 overall and 7–2 in Southland play to finish in a tie for second place. They received an at-large bid to the FCS Playoffs where they defeated Southern Utah, McNeese State, and Colgate to advance to the Semifinals, where they lost to Jacksonville State. The 2015 season marked the Bearkats' 100th season of football.
