The Xbox 360 began production only 69 days before launch, [1] [2] and Microsoft was not able to supply enough systems to meet initial consumer demand in Europe or North America. [3] Forty thousand units were offered for sale on auction site eBay during the initial week of release, 10% of the total supply. [4] By year's end, Microsoft had shipped 1.5 million units, including 900,000 in North America, 500,000 in Europe, and 100,000 in Japan. [5]

On February 13, 2008, Microsoft announced that the Xbox 360 suffered shortages in the U.S. in January 2008, possibly continued into February. [11] [12] [13] Prior to the release of the NPD Group's video game statistics for January 2008, the Xbox 360 was in second place behind the Wii in U.S. sales for most months since the Wii and PS3's release. [12] On May 14, 2008, Microsoft announced that 10 million Xbox 360s had been sold and that it was the "first current generation gaming console" to surpass the 10 million figure in the US. [14] In the US, the Xbox 360 was the leader in current-generation home console sales until June 2008, when it was surpassed by the Wii. [15] [16] [17] However, the Xbox 360 enjoyed continued sales success in the US, and starting from January 2011 to August 2013, was the best-selling console in the US for a record of 32 consecutive months. [18] [19] By the end of 2014, Xbox 360 sales had surpassed sales of the Wii, making the Xbox 360 the best-selling 7th-generation console in the US once again. [20]

In the first seven months of 2008, the Xbox 360 has sold 154,000 units in Canada, being outsold by the PlayStation 3 and Wii; [6] the Xbox 360 has sold a total of 870,000 units in Canada as of August 1, 2008. [6] In Europe, the Xbox 360 has sold seven million units as of November 20, 2008, according to Microsoft. [21] In Japan, the Xbox 360 has sold 866,167 units as of December 28, 2008, according to Enterbrain. [22] [23] In the United Kingdom, the Xbox 360 has sold 3.9 million units as of June 27, 2009, according to GfK Chart-Track. [24] Over 1 million units were sold in Spain across the console's lifecycle. [25]

The last official sales release for Xbox 360 sales came from Microsoft in June 2014, surpassing 84 million units. [26]

While the original Xbox sold poorly in Japan, selling just 450,000 units while it was on the market (between 2002 and 2005), [27] the Xbox 360 performed slightly better, selling 1.63 million units from 2005 to 2011. [7] Furthermore, it managed to outsell both the PlayStation 3 and Wii on a few occasions, such the week ending September 14, 2008, and the week ending February 22, 2009, when Japanese Xbox 360 exclusive games, Infinite Undiscovery [28] and Star Ocean: The Last Hope , [29] were released in those weeks, respectively.

Edge magazine reported in August 2011 that initially lacklustre and subsequently falling sales in Japan, where Microsoft had been unable to make serious inroads into the dominance of domestic rivals Sony and Nintendo, had led to retailers scaling back and in some cases discontinuing sales of the Xbox 360 completely. [30]

At E3 in May 2006, Bill Gates announced that Microsoft would have a head start of 10 million units by the time Sony and Nintendo entered the market. [31] Microsoft later specified that goal and estimated shipments of 10 million units by the end of 2006. [32]

Cumulative sales from the system's launch until June 28, 2007 were predicted to reach 12 million units, down from 13 to 15 million units estimated earlier. Being released one year ahead of its competitors, the Xbox 360 was the market leader throughout the first half of 2007; however, on September 12, 2007, it was reported by the Financial Times that the Xbox 360 had been surpassed by the Wii in terms of worldwide home console sales. [33]

On October 4, 2007, after the launch of Halo 3 , Microsoft stated that Xbox 360 sales had more than doubled compared to the previous average. [34] According to the NPD Group, the Xbox 360 outsold the Wii for the month of September in the United States, helped in part by the spike in sales seen after the launch of Halo 3, which sold 3.3 million copies in the U.S. in a 12-day period. [35] The Xbox had sales of 528,000 units for September, while the Wii had sales of 501,000 units. [36]

Despite the relatively strong sales figures, Microsoft's gaming division was losing money. Through 2005, the Xbox gaming division had lost over $4 billion, [37] however, Microsoft expected the console to start making money in 2008 [38] due to a loss leader market strategy of selling consoles below cost in order to obtain market saturation and gain profits on software and peripherals with a much higher profit margin. [39] [40] Additionally, Microsoft took a charge of $1 billion on its June 2007 income statement to account for the cost of replacing bricked Xbox 360s. [41]

In Europe, the Xbox 360 sold 2 million units in 2006 and 1.9 million in 2007 according to estimates by Electronic Arts. [42] [43] In 2007, the Xbox 360 sold 4.62 million units in the U.S. according to the NPD Group, [44] [45] [46] and 257,841 in Japan according to Enterbrain. [47] [48] [49] In 2008, the Xbox 360 sold 317,859 units in Japan, according to Enterbrain. [22] [49]

On May 13, 2008, Microsoft stated that there will not be a release of a newer version of the Xbox 360 in 2009. Microsoft representative says, "While we [Microsoft] don't normally comment on rumors like this [release of newer and smaller Xbox 360], we can tell you that we have no plans to release a new console in 2009". [50]

On May 28, 2009, Microsoft announced that sales have surpassed the 30-million unit-mark, stating that 2008 was Microsoft's "biggest year in history" also due to the increase of Xbox Live users. [51]

On January 6, 2011, Microsoft stated that the Xbox 360 sold over 50 million units worldwide during their CES 2011 conference. In addition, they stated that the Kinect sold about 8 million units, 3 million more than initially predicted, during the product's first 60 days on the market. It was also announced that Xbox Live had more than 30 million users, making 2010 the best year to date for the online service. [52]

On February 11, 2013, Microsoft reported that it has sold 76 million units worldwide, and 24 million Kinect sensors. [53]

Microsoft announced the Xbox One, successor to the Xbox 360, at E3 on June 10, 2013. It is found in only black color, the length, width and height is 7.91, 5.51 and 2.56 inches respectively. [54] They also announced that the Xbox 360 would receive an external aesthetic redesign based on the upcoming Xbox One design, with the updated console itself released on the same day as the announcement. [55]

In June 2014, Microsoft announced that Xbox 360 sales exceeded 84 million units. [26]

The history of video game consoles, both home and handheld, had their origins in the 1970s. The concept of home consoles used to play games on a television set was founded by the 1972 Magnavox Odyssey, first conceived by Ralph H. Baer in 1966. Handheld consoles bore out from electro-mechanical games that had used mechanical controls and light-emitting diodes (LED) as visual indicators. Handheld electronic games had replaced the mechanical controls with electronic and digital components, and with the introduction of Liquid-crystal display (LCD) to create video-like screens with programmable pixels, systems like the Microvision and the Game & Watch became the first handheld video game consoles, and fully realized by the Game Boy system.

<i>Lost Planet: Extreme Condition</i> 2006 video game

Lost Planet: Extreme Condition is a third-person shooter video game developed and published by Capcom for Xbox 360, Microsoft Windows and PlayStation 3. The game was released in Japan in December 2006 and worldwide in January 2007. Originally intended to be an Xbox 360 exclusive, it was later ported and released for Microsoft Windows in June 2007 and PlayStation 3 in February 2008.

The Xbox 360 launch marked the release of the first high-profile seventh generation video game console. It was Microsoft's second foray in console development succeeding their 2001 launch of the original Xbox.

Wii Play is a party video game developed and published by Nintendo for the Wii console. It was released as a launch game for the console in Japan, Europe, and Australia, and was released in North America in February 2007. The game features nine minigames, including a Duck Hunt-esque shooting range, a fishing game, and a billiards game, each of which are designed to showcase the features of the Wii Remote controller.

The Xbox 360 is a home video game console developed by Microsoft. As the successor to the original Xbox, it is the second console in the Xbox series. It competed with Sony's PlayStation 3 and Nintendo's Wii as part of the seventh generation of video game consoles. It was officially unveiled on MTV on May 12, 2005, with detailed launch and game information announced later that month at the 2005 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3).

The seventh generation of home video game consoles began on November 22, 2005, with the release of Microsoft's Xbox 360 home console. This was followed by the release of Sony Computer Entertainment's PlayStation 3 on November 17, 2006, and Nintendo's Wii on November 19, 2006. Each new console introduced new technologies. The Xbox 360 offered games rendered natively at high-definition video (HD) resolutions, the PlayStation 3 offered HD movie playback via a built-in 3D Blu-ray Disc player, and the Wii focused on integrating controllers with movement sensors as well as joysticks. Some Wii controllers could be moved about to control in-game actions, which enabled players to simulate real-world actions through movement during gameplay. By this generation, video game consoles had become an important part of the global IT infrastructure; it is estimated that video game consoles represented 25% of the world's general-purpose computational power in 2007.

<i>Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock</i> 2007 video game

Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock is a music rhythm video game developed by Neversoft and published by Activision. It is the third main installment in the Guitar Hero series, following Guitar Hero II. It is the first game in the series to be developed by Neversoft after Activision's acquisition of RedOctane and MTV Games' purchase of Harmonix, the previous development studio for the series. The game was released worldwide for the PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Wii and Xbox 360 in October 2007, with Budcat Creations assisting Neversoft on developing the PlayStation 2 port and Vicarious Visions solely developing on the Wii port respectively. Aspyr published the Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X versions of the game, releasing them later in 2007.

The 2010s was the fifth decade in the industry's history. The decade was notable for producing the first truly "3D" games and consoles, introducing cloud gaming and virtual reality to consumers, and the rising influence of tablet-based and mobile casual games. The industry remained heavily dominated by the actions of Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft, but it remains unforeseen how their dominance will be affected by cloud gaming and the growing smartphone and tablet market.
