History

Yonkers Middle High School was ranked the 24th best American high school and the 4th best New York State high school in 2012 by U.S. News & World Report . [3] [4]

In 2014, an evacuation was issued for the school after 152 patients were transported from the school to several hospitals after being treated for fumes. Several students displayed pepper spray-like symptoms, respiratory issues, and shortness of breath. [5] The patients were released the next day. [6] The school opened the next day with no incident. [7]

Activities

Yonkers High School offers Advanced Placement courses and participates in the International Baccalaureate program. In line with the IB program, Yonkers High School aims to create a "community of caring learners" by encouraging community service activity among its students. Students at Yonkers High School can graduate with a standard diploma, Regents Diploma, or Advanced Designation. Extracurricular opportunities for students include clubs such as Habitat for Humanity and the Bio-Diversity Club. [8]

Incidents

Yonkers Middle High School has been the subject of a few incidents. On September 29, 2021, a evacuation was issued after a bomb threat was made at the high school. This was the second time in a few days that a school in Westchester County was evacuated due to an unfounded threat. Students later returned to class after no threat was found. [9]

On January 6, 2023, a 16-year-old student was stabbed and assaulted in the bathroom of the school following a dispute over a young woman. Police said that they charged two suspects, who were two 17-year old male students. The two students were charged with second-degree attempted murder and assault. [10] A video of the assault was recorded by a student who witnessed the incident, and was later released on YouTube. [11]

Alumni

Alumni include the actor and comic Sid Caesar and John Howard Northrop, recipient of the 1946 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. [12]

The Platte Canyon High School hostage crisis was a hostage taking and shooting at Platte Canyon High School in Bailey, Colorado, on September 27, 2006. The gunman, 53-year-old Duane Roger Morrison, took seven female students hostage and sexually assaulted them, later releasing four. When police broke open the classroom's door with explosives, Morrison opened fire with a semi-automatic pistol before shooting hostage Emily Keyes in the head. The other remaining hostages escaped unharmed, and paramedics confirmed that Morrison had committed suicide shortly before police were able to enter the classroom. Keyes was pronounced dead at 4:32 p.m. MDT at Saint Anthony's Hospital in Denver, Colorado after undergoing emergency surgery.

Eastern International Baccalaureate Magnet High School is the only high school in mid-Michigan authorized to offer students the opportunity to earn an International Baccalaureate Diploma. As per the U.S. News 2018 High School Ranking, the Clinton School is one of the top high schools in the nation,. Applicants must succeed in an admission test, and satisfy other requirements according to the grade entered. For over twenty years Clinton was located on the top floor of the elementary school PS 11 but has now relocated to a new building near Union Square.
