Yuan Xiao is a Chinese gymnastics coach, who is currently the head coach of the Michigan Wolverines men's gymnastics team and assistant coach for the United States men's national artistic gymnastics team. [1]

Coaching career

Xiao began his coaching career as a coach for China men's national artistic gymnastics team, a position he held from 1994 until 1999. In 1999, he moved to Houston, Texas to coach at the Houston Gymnastics Academy. [2]

On October 19, 2000, Xiao was named a coach for the Oklahoma Sooners men's gymnastics team. While at Oklahoma, he helped lead the team to NCAA championships in 2002, 2003 and 2005, and runner-up finishes in 2001 and 2004. [3]

After five years as a coach at Oklahoma, on August 5, 2005, he was named an assistant coach for the Michigan Wolverines men's gymnastics team. [4] On April 25, 2022, Xiao was promoted to head coach, agreeing to a five-year contract through the 2027 season. [5] As head coach at Michigan, he has led the Wolverines to three consecutive Big Ten Conference championships and three consecutive Big Ten Conference Coach of the Year awards. [6] [7]

On June 1, 2023, Xiao was named head coach for the United States men's national artistic gymnastics team at the 2023 Summer World University Games. [8] However, the event was cancelled due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. [9] He served as an assistant coach for the United States at the 2024 Summer Olympics. [10] [11] Team USA's won a bronze medal in the team all-around, their first in the event since 2008. [12] [13]

Personal life

Xiao and his wife, Julia, a former Cirque du Soleil performer, have two daughters, Pearl and Sophia. [1]

Beverly Jean Plocki is an American gymnastics coach, and the current coach of the Michigan Wolverines women's gymnastics team. In 32 years as the head coach at Michigan, her teams have a record of 830–263–4 and have won 25 Big Ten Conference championships, and advanced to 25 NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championships, including 16 straight NCAA championship tournaments from 1993 to 2008. Plocki led her team to the NCAA Championship in 2021, the first championship won by a Big Ten Conference team.

The 1990–91 Michigan Wolverines men's basketball team represented the University of Michigan in intercollegiate college basketball during the 1990–91 season. The team played its home games in the Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and was a member of the Big Ten Conference. Under the direction of head coach Steve Fisher, the team finished eighth in the Big Ten Conference. The team earned an invitation to the 1991 National Invitation Tournament (NIT) where it was eliminated in the first round. The team was unranked for the entire seventeen weeks of Associated Press Top Twenty-Five Poll, and it also ended the season unranked in the final UPI Coaches' Poll. The team had a 0–7 record against ranked opponents.

A retired artistic gymnast, he represented Bangladesh at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and was a captain of the Michigan Wolverines men's gymnastics team. He was an assistant coach for the Stanford Cardinal men's gymnastics team for over six years, was the head coach for the men's gymnastics athlete resident program at the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center until its dissolution in 2022, and is currently coaching at EVO Gymnastics.

He was also a member of the two-time National Champion Michigan Wolverines men's gymnastics team.

Paul Wojciech Juda is an American artistic gymnast. He is a member of the United States men's national artistic gymnastics team. He was also a two-time silver medalist at the 2021 Pan American Championships. In NCAA Gymnastics, he competes for the Michigan Wolverines, where he has won five Big Ten titles and three individual NCAA championships.

The 2023 Michigan Wolverines football team represented the University of Michigan in the East Division of the Big Ten Conference during the 2023 NCAA Division I FBS football season. In their ninth and final year under head coach Jim Harbaugh, the Wolverines compiled an undefeated 15–0 record, outscored opponents by a total of 538 to 156, and won their third consecutive Big Ten championship with a 26–0 victory over Iowa in the Big Ten Championship Game. They defeated No. 4 Alabama, 27–20 in overtime, in the 2024 Rose Bowl. The Wolverines then defeated No. 2 Washington, 34–13, in the 2024 College Football Playoff National Championship to claim the first College Football Playoff (CFP) title and 12th national championship in program history, the first since 1997, and the first consensus national championship since 1948. With a win against Maryland on November 18, Michigan became the first program in college football history to reach 1,000 wins.
