Zach Panning (born March 29, 1995) [1] is an American long distance runner and marathoner. He ran collegiately at Grand Valley State University where he won a NCAA Division II Cross Country championship in 2018. [2] He ran for team USA at the 2023 World Athletics Championships. [3] Panning Qualified for the 2024 United States Olympic marathon trials following the Chicago Marathon, at the trials he finished 6th after leading for the majority of the race. [4]

Running career

High school

Panning attended Concordia Lutheran High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana. [5] [6] At the 2013 IHSAA state xc meet, Panning lead for most of the race but when he was 100m from the finish he fell and lost his lead ultimately finishing in 22nd before getting medical attention. [7] That spring, he finished 4th in the state in the 3200m. [8]

College

Panning originally committed to Temple University, but the school cut their track program shortly after. Instead, Panning attended Grand Valley State University where he ran Cross Country and Track. His first season with the Lakers - in 2015 - he redshirted. Following his redshirt year - in his first collegiate track season, Panning received U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-America honors for both the indoor and outdoor 5,000 meter races. In his junior and senior year he established himself among the upper echelon of Division II collegiate running, winning national titles in the outdoor 5,000 and 10,000 meter races, as well as the team awarded Mike Lynch award. In 2018 GVSU won the D2 Cross Country national championship. In the championship race Panning placed second overall, despite falling in the first 30 meters, finishing the 10k course in 31:53.6 as the first scoring member on his team and second overall. Professional

Panning is a member of the Hanson Brooks Original Distance project - based in Rochester Hills, Michigan where he is coached by Keith and Kevin Hanson. [11] [12] [13] He ran at the 2022 Chicago Marathon where he placed second among Americans and qualified for the 2024 Olympic trials. [14] He won the 2023 Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle 8000 meter run. [15] Panning competed in the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest. There he was the leading American in the marathon, finishing with a time of 2:11:21 and 13th place. Moving up from 39th place halfway through the event. [13] [16] During the 2024 Olympic trials Panning made an early move and upped the pace on the sixth mile. He would ultimately lead the men's race for the majority of the 26.2 miles, only to fade on the twenty third mile and drop to third place - still in place to qualify for the 2024 Summer Olympics. However, he would be passed again on the 25th mile before ultimately falling to sixth place. Formerly a Nike athlete for the majority of his professional career, Dathan joined the Hansons-Brooks Distance Project team in 2017. In early May 2020, he announced his retirement from competition. He signed with the Swiss shoe brand On shortly thereafter in June 2020 and currently acts as the coach for the OAC in Boulder, Colorado.

Galen Rupp is an American long-distance runner. He competed in the Summer Olympics in 2008 in Beijing, 2012 in London, 2016 in Rio de Janeiro and 2021 in Tokyo. He won the silver medal in the men's 10,000 meters in London and the bronze medal in the men's marathon in Rio de Janeiro. Rupp competed for the University of Oregon and trained under Alberto Salazar as a member of the Nike Oregon Project. He won the 2017 Chicago Marathon, becoming the first American to do so since Khalid Khannouchi in 2002. Rupp won the marathon at the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials in Atlanta with a time of 2:09:20, and qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, where he finished eighth.

Chris Derrick is an American distance runner who won 3 consecutive US Cross Country Championships in 2013–15. He attended Stanford University, where he earned 14 All-American honors and holds an American junior record in the 5000 meters.

Frank Richardson is a retired marathon runner who competed during the 1970s and 1980s. Before entering his first races in the late 1970s, Richardson was 4th at the 1976 NCAA Men's Division III Cross Country Championship and 1st at the 1977 NCAA Division III Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the 10,000 meters. In World Marathon Majors, Richardson was 20th at the 1979 Boston Marathon and did not complete the 1980 Boston event. That year, Richardson won the 1980 Chicago Marathon with a course record time of 2:15:15 and was 10th at the 1980 New York City Marathon. In other events, Richardson won the 1980 USA Marathon Championships and was 9th in the marathon at the 1980 United States Olympic Trials. After ending his marathon career in 1985, Richardson worked at a pharmacy before resuming road racing in 2001.

Reed Fischer is an American long-distance runner who won bronze in the 10,000-meter race at the 2018 NACAC Championships. Fischer was later selected for the American team in the 2023 World Athletics Half Marathon Championship.
