Zahira College, Kalmunai (commonly known as Kalmunai Zahira) is a boys national school in Ampara District, Sri Lanka. [1] It was founded in 1949 as English Junior School by the M. S. Kariapper, Member of Ceylon Parliament. The college is situated in Sainthamaruthu, in the municipality of Kalmunai. It has been graded as 1AB Super School by Ministry of Education Sri Lanka and it has all the streams of GCE Advanced Level in Sri Lanka - Biological and Physical science, Commerce, Arts and Technology. [2]

In 2004, the school was affected by a tsunami. [3] The current principal of Kalmunai Zahira is M.I.Jabir Sir [4]

Zahira College is an Islamic school at Colombo in Maradana, Sri Lanka and was founded in 1892 as Al Madrasathul Zahira by notable Islamic lawyer and educationalist, Muhammad Cassim Siddi Lebbe, with the active patronage of Ahmed Orabi Pasha of Egypt. The college also has one of the oldest mosques in the country on its campus.

The Baby 81 incident was a widely reported parental identity dispute about a baby who survived the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and became an emblem of the effect of the disaster on the families involved. Many of the details in initial reports of the events were subsequently disputed.

Kalmunai City in Sri Lanka

Kalmunai is the largest city of Ampara District. It is also the largest city of Eastern Province, Sri Lanka. It had a total population of 106,780 as of 2011. It is one of the few Muslim-majority municipalities in the country. When Muslims in Colombo were expelled by Portuguese in the 17th century, they fled to Kandy and sought refuge with King Rajasinha II, who resettled these refugees in Kalmunai and Kattankudy (4,000). Kalmunai was the site of the royal farm, as a result of this settlement, it became a Muslim-majority area.

Sammanthurai Town in Sri Lanka
