Zoe O'Connell is a British Liberal Democrat politician, [3] and a prominent campaigner for transgender rights.
O'Connell has campaigned on transgender rights for a number of years, and has been regularly quoted in national publications on these issues. Her contributions include writing for publications including The Guardian and HuffPost about trans issues and experiences, [4] [5] including calling for a greater focus on the safety and mental health of young transgender individuals. She has also criticised the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013 for not going far enough to include transgender rights. [6] She is a member of the executive of LGBT+ Liberal Democrats [7] and has co-authored Liberal Democrat policy papers on both equality and on security. [8] [9]
Outside LGBT rights, she has also campaigned on online privacy issues, such as opposing the Snoopers' Charter, [3] on other equalities issues including presentation of titles on driving licenses, [10] and on local issues such as urban speed limits and road safety. [11]
She was the Liberal Democrat candidate for Maldon in both the 2015 and 2017 general elections; [12] [13] finishing in fifth and third place, with 4.5% and 4.3% of the vote respectively. [14] [15] This made her one of a small number of openly transgender individuals to have run for a parliamentary seat in the UK (one of four in 2015, and one of nine in 2017. [16] )
She was an elected member of Cambridge City Council, representing Trumpington ward from 2015-2019, and was deputy leader of the Liberal Democrat group. [1] [17]
O'Connell is also a vice-chair of the Liberal Democrats' Federal Conference Committee, [18] which among other functions selects which policy motions can be debated (and thus potentially become party policy) at the party's federal conferences.
O'Connell is herself transgender, and has attracted significant media attention for her polyamorous family life. [2] She lives with Sarah Brown (herself a Liberal Democrat activist and former Cambridge city councillor), Sylvia (Sarah's wife), and a number of snakes. [19]
She has three children by her first marriage, [20] works in managing IT systems, and is a former member of the Territorial Army; she is also a keen rock climber and sailor. [21]

Ben Jeffrey Peter Summerskill is chair of The Silver Line and director of the Criminal Justice Alliance, a consortium of 135 charities working across the GB criminal justice pathway. He was the chief executive of the UK-based lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality organisation Stonewall, the largest gay equality body in Europe, from 2003 to 2014. He has also worked as a businessman and journalist. Summerskill is an occasional contributor to The Guardian, The Independent on Sunday, The Observer, The Times, Time Out and other publications. In 2015 he won a Lifetime Achievement Award at the British LGBT Awards In 2017, he was appointed by the UK government to the council (Board) of ACAS, the Advisory Conciliation and Arbitration Service. He was first appointed a trustee of the Silver Line in 2017.
The National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE) is a nonprofit social equality organization founded in 2003 by transgender activist Mara Keisling in Washington, D.C. The organization works primarily in the areas of policy advocacy and media activism with the aim of advancing the equality of transgender people in the United States. Among other transgender-related issue areas, NCTE focuses on discrimination in employment, access to public accommodations, fair housing, identity documents, hate crimes and violence, criminal justice reform, federal research surveys and the Census, and health care access.

Sarah Brown is a transgender activist and former Liberal Democrat politician. She was the Cambridge City Councillor for Petersfield ward between 2010 and 2014, serving as Executive Councillor for Community Wellbeing since 2013 and served as a member of the LGBT+ Liberal Democrats executive. She is a trans woman and, for several years, was the only openly transgender elected politician in the UK. In 2011, she appeared on the Independent on Sunday "Pink List" as the 28th most influential LGBT person in the UK, dropping to 34th in the 2012 list, but rising again to 27th in the 2013 list.
My Transsexual Summer is a British documentary-style reality series about seven transgender people in different stages of transition. For five weekends in the summer of 2011, they stay together in a large holiday home in Bedfordshire, where they meet and help each other with some of the struggles that transgender people face. Between these weekend retreats, they go back to their lives and real-world challenges.
LGBT+ Liberal Democrats is a British lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and other sexual minorities equality group of the Liberal Democrats political party. The organisation is one of several Specified Associated Organisations, giving it special status within the party, and has been referred to as one of the "most important" of such groups. The group campaigns both within the party and UK-wide on LGBT+ issues, as well as mentoring and providing advice to the party's candidates.
The Women's Equality Party (WEP) was a feminist political party set up in the United Kingdom in 2015. The idea was conceived by Catherine Mayer and Sandi Toksvig at the Women of the World Festival, when they concluded that there was a need for a party to campaign for gender equality to the benefit of all. The launch meeting was on 28 March 2015 under the title "The Women's Equality Party needs you. But probably not as much as you need the Women's Equality Party". The party's full policy was launched by its then-leader Sophie Walker at Conway Hall on 20 October 2015. In January 2020, Mandu Reid took over as the party's leader.
Aimee Knight is a British transgender activist and former politician. She was a rising star in the Green Party and its equalities spokesperson. In 2018, her father, who had been her election agent, was convicted of raping a child and she was no-fault suspended during an investigation into safeguarding failures by the party. She subsequently joined the Liberal Democrats in 2019 and was suspended after tweets appeared on her fiance's account stating he fantasized about children having sex, which she attributed to hacking.
Claire Darke is a British politician who served as Mayor of Wolverhampton from 2019 to 2021, holding the distinction of being the longest continuously serving female mayor in the city's history. First elected the councillor for Park Ward in 2008 as a Liberal Democrat before switching to the Labour Party in 2011, she currently serves as an Independent, having resigned from the Labour Party in 2024.
Helen Clare Belcher is a British transgender activist and Liberal Democrat politician. She has been featured in The Independent on Sunday's Rainbow List for her work on LGBT issues, particularly those affecting the trans community. In 2010 she co-founded Trans Media Watch, a trans-awareness charity for which she appeared on Newsnight. Belcher is a Wiltshire Councillor and the Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Reading West and Mid Berkshire, having previously stood for Parliament in Chippenham.
