The 2024 Wheeling, West Virginia municipal election was held on May 14, 2024, to elect members of the city council and mayor. The elections were held under the first-past-the-post system.
Incumbent mayor Glenn Elliott was term-limited and pn January 17, 2024 announced he was running for the U.S. Senate, leaving an open seat for the office. [1] Three candidates joined in the race for mayor: 3rd Ward Wheeling Councilwoman Rosemary Ketchum, Wheeling Vice Mayor Chad Thalman, and retired longtime executive director for the Greater Wheeling Sports and Entertainment Authority, Denny Magruder. [2] Insurance agent J.T. Thomas, [3] local businesswoman Beth Hinebaugh, [4] and Carl Carpenter had declared their candidacies as well. [5]

Wheeling is a city in the U.S. state of West Virginia. Located almost entirely in Ohio County, of which it is the county seat, it lies along the Ohio River in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and also contains a tiny portion extending into Marshall County. Wheeling is located about 60 miles (96 km) west of Pittsburgh and is the principal city of the Wheeling metropolitan area. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 27,062, and the metro area had a population of 139,513. It is the fifth most populous city in West Virginia, and the most populous in the state’s Northern Panhandle.
The 18th congressional district of Ohio is an obsolete congressional district last represented by Republican Bob Gibbs. The district voted for the majority party in the House of Representatives in every election since 1954.
Matthew John Dolan is an American politician and lawyer who is a member of the Ohio Senate from the 24th district, since 2017. He previously was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives from 2005 to 2010.
The 2011 West Virginia gubernatorial special election was a special election held on October 4, 2011 to fill the office of the West Virginia Governor, which became vacant upon the resignation of Joe Manchin, who resigned after he won a U.S. Senate special election. Lieutenant Governor and Senate President Earl Ray Tomblin, first in the line of succession to the Governorship, subsequently became acting governor. On January 18, 2011, the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals ruled that a special election for the Governorship must be held so a new governor can be in place by November 15, 2011, exactly one year after Manchin resigned. The primary election was held on May 14. Tomblin and Republican Bill Maloney won their respective primaries.
