Appanur is a village in the Kadaladi Taluk of Ramanathapuram District in Tamil Nadu, India. [3] It is located between Mudukulathur and Sayalgudi, on the State Highway 29 (SH29). [4]

Location

Appanur is a small village. It is located on SH29, which runs from Thanjavur to Sayalgudi. [4] The SH29 then runs to join the East Coast Road (Thiruvanmiyur - Mahabalipuram - Marakkanam - Pondicherry Road). [5] Appanur is about 11 km from Mudukulathur, 36 km from Paramakudi and 55 km from Ramanathapuram.

History

It is said that Appanur has been known since ancient times as Thiru Appanur, though Thiru Appanur now refers to a place near Madurai. Appanur, as a part of the Ramnad district was under the Sethupathis during the beginning of the 17th century, then under the British Raj, before it came under the Union of India in 1947 when India received its independence. It is still an under developed area in India, along with the rest of the Ramnad district. [8] [9] [10] [11] Appanur is known for rainfed bittergourd cultivation.

Demography

Total population of the village is 2328, of whom males are 1178 and females are 1150. Overall literacy rate is 52.02%, male literacy rate is 64.69% and female literacy rate is 39.04%, according to the 2001 census. [12] [13] [14]

There are three schools in Appanur.

There is a Primary Health Centre, which comes under Paramakudi health district. [16]

There is also a branch post office. [17] [18]

Cultural Festivals

A local festival called 'Maasa' or 'Marsa' is celebrated every year. Other Tamil festivals like Pongal and Deepavali are also celebrated. Bullock-cart races, called Rekla races, are popular locally, and are organised during festival celebrations.

Sivaganga District is one of the 38 districts in Tamil Nadu state, India. This district was formed on 15 March 1985 by trifurcation of Ramanathapuram district into Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar and Sivagangai districts. Sivaganga is the district headquarters. Karaikudi and Sivaganga are the most populous Towns in the district. The Kingdom of Ramnad or Ramnad estate was a permanently settled kingdom and later zamindari estate that existed in the Ramnad subdivision of the Madurai district and later Ramnad district of the erstwhile Madras Presidency in British India from 1601. It was ruled by the rajas also had the title of Sethupathi. Madurai Nayaks ruled the Ramnad area with the appointed chieftains between 14th to 16th century CE, and in 17th century CE the appointed governors expanded their power to establish "Ramnad Kingdom" which was also called as "Maravar Kingdom" by the British. In 1795 CE, after an heir dispute, they were reduced to the status of zamidari by the East India Company. After the independence of India in 1947 the estates were merged in the Union of India and in 1949 all rulers lost the ruling rights, privy purse was also finally abolished in 1971.

The Presidency lasted till 1950, when it became the Madras State after India became a republic. In 1953, Telugu-speaking regions of the state split to form Andhra State. Parthibanur is a panchayath in Ramanathapuram district, Tamil Nadu in southern India belonging to Paramakudi Taluk, away from 61 km from Madurai and 54 km from District headquarters (Ramanathapuram). Parthibanur also belongs to Paramakudi Assembly constituency which is a part of Ramanathapuram. Although a small town, and it is located in the centre of the three main towns such as Paramakudi, Manamadurai and Kamuthi.
