The Indonesian Athletics Association (Indonesian : Persatuan Atletik Seluruh Indonesia; abbreviated as PASI) is the World Athletics recognized national governing body for the sport of athletics in Indonesia. [1] [2] [3] They are a member of the World Athletics and the Asian Athletics Association. They are also a member of the National Sports Committee of Indonesia (KONI) and the Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI). [4]

History

Origin

Pre-Independence: NIAU

The sport of athletics first entered Indonesia before independence, during the Dutch colonialism era when Indonesia was named Dutch East Indies. In the 1910s, athletics entered school curriculum as one of the school subject. [1] [2] [3] The sport began to spread throughout the country, spearheaded by the formation of many athletic clubs such as ISV, Hellas, and IAC in Jakarta, ABA in Solo, and PAS in Surabaya. [2]

Many such clubs were members of the Nederlandsche Indische Athletik Unie, or NIAU or the Athletics Association of the Dutch East Indies (Indonesian : Perserikatan Atletik Hindia Belanda), formed in 1917. NIAU was the sole nationwide athletic organization in the country; hence, it's responsible for organizing domestic athletics competition in the Dutch East Indies. [1] [2] [3]

The development of the sport gathered more momentum during the Japanese occupation. [1] [3]

Post-Independence: PORI's athletics division

However after independence, NIAU can no longer be maintained and was disbanded. [2] In 1947, the Sports Association of the Republic of Indonesia (Indonesian : Persatuan Olahraga Republik Indonesia; abbreviated as PORI) was formed to be a forum for national sports activities in the newly found Republics. PORI have an athletics division which served as the foundation for PASI. [2]

Founding

There were disputes over when PASI was first founded. The origin story remains the same, as does the date of September 3. However, there were differences over the year when PASI was founded and where the event took place. Kompas mentioned that the founding of PASI was on September 3, 1958, in Jakarta. [3] PASI's official website, meanwhile, citing Eddy Purnomo and Dapan's Dasar-Dasar Atletik, mentioned that the founding of PASI happened on September 3, 1950, in Semarang. [1]

Whatever the version, PASI was founded in the 1950s and remains the only umbrella for the sport of athletics in Indonesia to this very day.

Chairmanship

For most of its existence, PASI was famously led by a businessman and a former minister of trade and industry named Bob Hasan, also known as Bung Hasan. [5] First elected in 1976 to replace Sayidiman Suryohadiprojo, H. Mohammad Hassan led PASI until his death on March 31, 2020 due to cancer at the age of 89 years old. [6] His commitment and dedication to the world of athletics began with his passion for running. [7] This passion brought him to the chairmanship of PASI which was offered to him by President Suharto himself. [7] He led PASI diligently. He often used his own money to bankroll PASI. [7] [8] For that dedication, Hasan was named 'the father of Indonesian athletics' after he was elected as PASI's chairman for the 2016–2020 period. [8]

Currently, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan holds the position for the 2021–2025 period. [9] [10]

Indonesia competed in the Summer Olympic Games for the first time at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, Finland. With three male athletes, Indonesia was one of the smallest teams competing in Helsinki. A non-participant served as flag bearer for the Indonesian delegation at the opening ceremony. The team did not win any medals. The weightlifter Thio Ging Hwie ranked eighth overall in men's lightweight, Maram Sudarmodjo ranked 20th in men's high jump, and the swimmer Habib Suharko did not advance past the preliminary round.

Ferdinand Alexander "Ferry" Sonneville was an Indonesian badminton player noted for his touch, consistency, tactical astuteness, and coolness under pressure. He won numerous international singles titles from the mid-1950s through the early 1960s and his clutch performances helped Indonesia to win its first three Thomas Cup titles consecutively in 1958, 1961, and 1964, setting the pattern for his country's continued formidable presence in world badminton. Sonneville's playing career ended on a sour note in the 1967 Thomas Cup final in Jakarta when, past his prime, he was roundly booed by his countrymen after dropping singles matches in Indonesia's controversial loss to Malaysia.

The Indonesian National Badminton Championships or officially known as the Kejuaraan Nasional PBSI is a tournament organized by the Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI) to crown the best badminton players in Indonesia.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">National Sports Week</span>

The National Sports Week is a multi-sport event held every four years in Indonesia. The participants of this event are the athletes from all provinces of Indonesia. It is organized by the National Sports Committee of Indonesia (KONI).

Dian David Mickael Jacobs was an Indonesian athlete who competed in table tennis, primarily Class 10 para table tennis. Born in Ujung Pandang, he took up table tennis at the age of ten and rose quickly through national tournaments. He was training to play internationally by 2000, and in 2001 he won his first gold medal, at the SEATTA Championships in Singapore. After 2010 he competed in para table tennis, having spent most of his career competing against athletes with full functionality. Having lost control in his right hand, he decided to compete in the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London, winning a bronze medal.

She was the girls' singles champion at the 2017 World Junior Championships. Tunjung also captained the Indonesia women's team at the 2022 Asia Team Championships, where they became champions.

Daniel Marthin is an Indonesian badminton player affiliated with Djarum club since 2015. He was a champion at the 2019 Asian and World Junior Championships in the boys' doubles event. Marthin was part of Indonesia winning team at the 2020 Thomas Cup.

The Indonesian Volleyball Federation, commonly called PBVSI sometimes translated as All-Indonesian Volleyball Association) is the governing body of volleyball and beach volleyball in Indonesia. Formed in 1955, its headquarters are in Pancoran, South Jakarta. The PBVSI is a member of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) and the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC), as well as the volleyball sports in the National Sports Committee of Indonesia. The XX National Sports Week, also called PON XX Papua or PON Papua 2021, was the twentieth edition of the Indonesian National Sports Week, hosted by Papua. The event took place from 2 October to 15 October 2021. Lukas Enembe Stadium was the main venue for this edition, both the opening and closing ceremonies. This event was originally going to be held in 2020, but was postponed to 2021 due to COVID-19 pandemic. This edition was the first PON held in the province, as well as in the Western New Guinea region and Eastern Indonesian Time areas.

Kyai Haji Abdul Halim, known as KH Abdul Halim Majalengka (1887–1962) was an Indonesian Islamic scholar and nationalist figure. He founded a number of Islamic organizations in the Dutch East Indies, including the Hayatul Qulub and the Persyarikatan Ulama and was a member of several national consultative councils during the transition to Indonesian independence in the 1940s. He was declared a National Hero of Indonesia in 2008 by then-president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Sepak Takraw Association of Indonesia</span> Sport governing body

The Sepak Takraw Association of Indonesia, is the national governing body for sepaktakraw in Indonesia, officially found in 1971 with four founding regional affiliations, and had been becoming a member of the National Sports Committee of Indonesia (KONI) since 1979. Originally, PSTI officially registered under the title ‘Persatuan Sepak Raga Seluruh Indonesia’ (PERSERAS), however, after the inception of the Asian Sepaktakraw Federation in 1982, which the PERSERAS was considered one of the founding members, the organization was renamed to ‘Persatuan Sepak Takraw Seluruh Indonesia’ (PERSETASI) and lastly, as known today, ‘Persatuan Sepak Takraw Indonesia’ (PSTI).
