Poovankery Francis Mathews is an Indian author of Malayalam literature and a screenplay writer in Malayalam film and Television industries. [1] A Winner of a National Film Award for Best Screenplay [2] and multiple State television and other literary awards including the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Novel and Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Story, he is known for his original style of writing. [3] Literary works such as Muzhakkam, Kadalinte Manam, Adiyalapretham, Iruttil Oru Punyalan, and Chaavunilam and screenplays such as Sararaanthal, Mikhayelinte Santhathikal, Megham, Kutty Srank and Ee.Ma.Yau are his major works. [3]

Early years

Mathews was born in a Latin Christian family [4] on 18 February 1960 in Ernakulam, Kerala to Francis of the Poovankery house and his wife Mary. [5] After his early schooling in Don Bosco School and St. Augustine's School, Kochi, he graduated in economics from St. Albert's College Kochi, in 1980 and secured his master's degree in Malayalam in 1982. [5] He started writing at the age of 10 when he used to write and direct one- act plays. [6] He took to short stories at the age of 16 [6] and his short stories have been published in leading Malayalam publications like Malayala Manorama, Kalakaumudi, Mathrubhumi, Madhyamam and Bhashaposhini. [5] He spent his regular career at Advocate General's Office of the High Court of Kerala from where he superannuated in 2016. [7]

Literary career

His first short story anthology, Njayarazhcha Mazha Peyyukayayirunnu (It Was Raining on Sunday), was published in 1986 by Current Books. His second work was a novel, Chaavunilam (Land of the Dead), [8] based on the coastal life in Kochi [9] and published in 1996 by DC Books, [10] which won the State Bank of Travancore award for the best novel. [10] Subsequent years produced two more short story collections, Jalakanyakayum Gandarvanum (the Mermaid and the Celestial Lover) and 2004il Alice (Alice in 2004). [11] In 2013, a short story anthology, Kathakal (Stories), [12] and his memoirs, Theerajeevithathinu Oru Oppees (A Requiem for the Coastal Life), were published. [13] His second novel, Iruttil Oru Punyalan (A Saint Shrouded in Darkness), was published in 2015, and two of its chapters were published by Mathrubhumi weekly, prior to the official release of the book. [14] The book has since been translated into Tamil, under the title, Iruttil Oru Punithan, by P. S. Ramesh. [15]

Film and television career

Mathews debuted into screen writing with a documentary film, Keep the City Clean. [3] In 1991, he won the Kerala State Television Award for screen play, for the tele-series Sararaanthal (The Lantern), broadcast in Doordarshan. [3] He received his second state television award for Mikhayelinte Santhathikal (Descendants of Mikhayel), in 1993. [3] Several works followed, which included Dr. Harischandra (1994), Roses in December (1995), Charulatha (1999), Aathma (2000), Edayanum Mankidavum (2003), Megham (2004), Mantharam (2005), Aa Amma (2006), Pakalmazha (2009) and Daivathinu Swantham Devootti (2012), the last one winning State television award for the best Series. [16] He has also won the script writing competition held nationwide by National Film Development Corporation of India, for Naattukaaryam, in 1993. [3]

Mathews' foray into big screen was in 1986 with the story of Thanthram (the Plot), a Mammooty starrer. [17] This was followed by Puthran (the Son), [18] a sequel to the successful tele series, Mikhayelinte Santhathikal. [19] The next was Kutty Srank, directed by Shaji N. Karun, [20] which won him the National Film Award for Best Screenplay for the year 2010. [2] Antichrist, a Lijo Jose Pellissery project, with Prithviraj, Fahadh Faasil and Indrajith in lead roles, [21] was put on hold after initial discussions. [7] The next project, Ee.Ma.Yau, a Lijo Jose Pellissery film, [22] [23] was released in May 2018 and the film received good critical reviews. [24] [25] [26] [27] Another Lijo Jose Pellissery film has also been announced, with Mamootty in the lead role. [28]

Mathews also sat in the jury panel of the Kerala State Film Awards for the year 2016. [29]

Personal life

Mathews, a recipient of the KCBC Yuvaprathibha (Young Talent) award (1999), is married to Shobha [3] and the couple has two sons, Unni Mathews and Anand Mathews, both of whom are part of the 'Karikku' team. [5] He has been employed with the Advocate General's Office, Ernakulam, [5] and has since superannuated from service. [7]

She is a writer of fiction, a translator, and critic in English and Malayalam. The Malayalam film Njandukalude Nattil Oridavela was based on her book.

<i>Ee.Ma.Yau.</i> 2018 Indian film

Ee.Ma.Yau. is a 2018 Indian Malayalam-language independent tragedy film directed by Lijo Jose Pellissery and written by P. F. Mathews. It stars Vinayakan, Chemban Vinod Jose, Pauly Valsan, Bitto Davis, Kainakary Thankaraj, Dileesh Pothan and Arya Salim in the main roles. The film had its premiere on 30 November 2017 and was theatrically released on 4 May 2018. The film revolves around the death and funeral of an older man from the Latin Catholic community in Chellanam, Ernakulam district. Lijo Jose Pellissery won the Best Director Award at the 48th Kerala State Film Awards for Ee.Ma.Yau. The film won the Silver Peacock-Best Director and Best Actor awards at the 49th International Film Festival of India. It also won two awards at the International Film Festival of Kerala viz. the NETPAC Award for Best Asian film in Competition and the Golden Crow Pheasant Award for the best director. It was included in The Hindu's top 25 Malayalam films of the decade and is widely regarded as one of the defining movies of the New Wave Movement.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">S. Hareesh</span> Indian writer

S. Hareesh is an Indian writer, translator and screenwriter of Malayalam literature and cinema. He is best known for his short stories and his acclaimed but controversial debut novel, Meesa, which explores caste in Kerala in the mid-20th century. The novel, initially serialized in the Mathrubhumi weekly, was withdrawn after protests by right-wing Hindutva groups and caste-community organizations for "maligning Hindu women and temple priests". It was later published as a full novel by DC Books. Hareesh is the recipient of several honours including the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Novel and the Geetha Hiranyan Endowment of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi. In November 2020, the English translation of Meesa, titled Moustache, was selected for the JCB Prize for Literature, the Indian literary award with the highest prize money.

Jallikattu is a 2019 Indian Malayalam-language independent action thriller film directed by Lijo Jose Pellissery with a screenplay by S. Hareesh and R. Jayakumar, based on the short story Maoist by Hareesh. The film stars Antony Varghese, Chemban Vinod Jose, Sabumon Abdusamad and Santhy Balachandran. In the film, a bull escapes from a slaughterhouse in a hilly remote village and the villagers sets out to hunt it down.

Gokulan is an Indian actor who appears in Malayalam films. He made his acting debut through the 2013 Malayalam movie Punyalan Agarbattis by doing the character of Jimbroottan, which became popular. As of 2021, he has so far acted in more than 30 Malayalam movies.
