Rano

Rano is a Local Government Area and headquarters of Rano Emirate council in Kano State, Nigeria. Rano is a local government area in Kano State with administrative headquarters in the town of Rano. Rano local government area is a Hausa-Fulani community in the southern senatorial district of Kano State otherwise known as Kano South Senatorial District alongside Albasu, Bebeji, Bunkure, Doguwa, Gaya, Kiru, Takai, Ajingi, Rogo, Kibiya, Tudun Wada, Garko, Wudil and Sumaila local government areas. Rano local government area also forms a federal constituency alongside Bunkure and Kibiya local government areas. It has an area of 520 km2 and a population of 145,439 at the 2006 census. The local government area is bounded to the north by Garun Mallam and Bunkure local government areas, to the east by Kibiya local government area, to the south by Tudun Wada local government area, and to the west by Bebeji local government area. The Rano local government council is in charge of public administration in Rano local government area. The council is led by a chairman who is the executive head of the local government. The Rano legislative council make laws governing Rano local government area. It consists of 10 Councillors representing the 10 wards of the local government area.

History

Rano is historically seen as one of the seven legitimate Hausa states founded by the descendants of the legendary Bayajidda. Sometime during the middle ages, it was absorbed into the Sultanate of Kano, presumably during the reign of Yaji I where the Kano Chronicle mentions Yaji ousting the King of Rano from Zamna Gaba. Rano has since remained a part of Kano.

The rainy season in Rano is oppressive and largely cloudy, the dry season is partly gloomy, and it is hot all year. Throughout the year, the temperature normally ranges from 54°F to 100°F, with temperatures rarely falling below 48°F or rising above 105°F. [2]

A prominent figure in the state's history, Yaji used a religious revolution to finally solidify his family's grasp on Kano and its sub-kingdoms after centuries of strife. He was also responsible for the absorption of Rano into Kano.

The Kingdom of Kano was a Hausa kingdom in the north of what is now Nigeria that was established before 1000 AD, and lasted until the proclamation of the Sultanate of Kano by King Ali Yaji Dan Tsamiya in 1349. The capital is now the modern city of Kano in Kano State.

The Sultanate of Kano was a Hausa kingdom in the north of what is now Nigeria that dates back to 1349, when the king of Kano, Ali Yaji (1349–1385), dissolved the cult of Tsumbubra and proclaimed Kano a sultanate. Before 1000 AD, Kano had been ruled as an Animist Hausa Kingdom, the Kingdom of Kano. The sultanate lasted until the Fulani Jihad in 1805 and the assassination of the last sultan of Kano in 1807. The sultanate was then replaced by the Kano Emirate, subject to the Sokoto Caliphate. The capital is now the modern city of Kano in Kano State.

Muhammad Dan Yaji, known as Muhammad Alwali II was the last sultan of the Sultanate of Kano. His reign coincided with a period of upheavals in Sudanic History that saw a series of religious Jihads waged by the Fula People. In 1807, after a protracted struggle with Fula clans, Muhammad Alwali was ambushed and assassinated at Burum-Burum in modern Kano. His death marked the end of the Kutumbawa line of Hausa aristocrats in Kano and the fall of the 800 year old Bagauda Dynasty.

The Dambazawa are a Fulani clan residing mainly in Kano State, Nigeria. They were among the key promoters, planners and executors of the Fulani Jihad in Kano, which took place between 1804 and 1807 under the leadership of Shehu Usuman dan Fodiyo. The clan was said to be the top financier of the jihad because it was said to be extremely wealthy at the time of the jihad. Other Fulani Clans that participated in the Jihad included: the Jobawa, the Yolawa, the Sullubawa, the Danejawa and others, as well as a contingent of the native Hausa people led by Malam Usuman bahaushe. Together they formed a formidable force and toppled the 158 year Kutumbawa dynasty led by its last ruler Muhammad Alwali dan Yaji dan Dadi bakutumbe who ruled between 1781 and 1806.

Kabiru Muhammad Inuwa is the 2nd Emir of Rano after the death of Alhaji Tafida Abubakar Ila Auta Bawo. Before being appointed as emir of Rano, he served in the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) and led traditional responsibilities where he served as Kaigaman Rano and District Head of Kibiya.

The 2023 Kano State gubernatorial election took place on 18 March 2023, to elect the Governor of Kano State, concurrent with elections to the Kano State House of Assembly as well as twenty-seven other gubernatorial elections and elections to all other state houses of assembly. The election—which was postponed from its original 11 March date—was held three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections. Incumbent APC Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje is term-limited and cannot seek re-election to a third term. Abba Kabir Yusuf of New Nigerian People won the election.

The 2023 Nigerian presidential election in Kano State will be held on 25 February 2023 as part of the nationwide 2023 Nigerian presidential election to elect the president and vice president of Nigeria. Other federal elections, including elections to the House of Representatives and the Senate, will also be held on the same date while state elections will be held two weeks afterward on 11 March.
