Serian is a town, and the capital of the Serian separated on 11 April 2015 from Samarahan Division, Sarawak, Malaysia. It is located about 40 miles (64 km) from Kuching. Sub-district headquarters towns are Balai Ringin and Tebedu.

The park covers an area of 24 square kilometres (9.3 sq mi) of extensive tropical rainforest with a number or rare and protected animals surrounding the 24 square kilometer artificial lake created by the Batang Ai hydroelectric reservoir. The park was proclaimed in 1991, and has become increasingly popular with locals and tourists despite the lack of facilities.

Established on 23 May 1973, SMSJ is the first boarding school or Sekolah Berasrama Penuh (SBP) ever built in the state of Johor. SMSJ is the 16th SBP built in Malaysia under the 2nd Malaysia Plan.
