10-5-60 is an EP and the first release by American band the Long Ryders. It was released in September 1983 by PVC Records and preceded the bands full-length debut album Native Sons . [1]
The Long Ryders had funded the recording sessions for 10-5-60 themselves [2] and managed to secure a deal with the import and distribution label Jem Records. [3] Jem agreed to take on distribution and release the EP on their sublabel PVC in late 1983. [2] [4] Long Ryder guitarist Sid Griffin: "I was working there so I got us on the in-house label, and they did it as a favour. ... it did really well, and they couldn't believe it – they did it as a sop to me." [5] 10-5-60 was produced by former Sparks guitarist Earle Mankey with the Long Ryders at Mankey's home based studio Earle's Garage in California. [6] The EP brought the Long Ryders immediate notice and was a success on US college radio. [4] "The people in the Gavin Report in San Francisco, a national radio tip sheet, really liked it", Griffin said. "This was a national professional tip sheet which was normally worried about people like Donna Summer and Billy Joel and Survivor and all those kind of acts that were mega popular in the 1980s. I had no idea of the impact that the Gavin Report writing about 10-5-60 had." [7]
The Long Ryders were initially linked with the neo-psychedelia of the Los Angeles Paisley Underground scene, [5] and 10-5-60 shows influences ranging from garage rock and psychedelia to Byrdsian folk and country rock. [8] [9] [10] In 2016, the Guardian's Michael Hann described the EP as "deeply indebted to the 60s". [11] In his book Country Roads: How Country Came to Nashville, musicologist Brian Hinton writes, "the band's punkish roots are sweetened by banjo, steel guitar and autoharp, and that Byrdsian propulsion is firmly on the launch pad. They are not played gently, though, and the vocals are the very antithesis of Nashville cool. If Gram Parsons approached country with respect, this is a full-tilt drunken assault." [12]
The cover, with its 1960s look echoing old Byrds promo shots, [8] was shot by noted punk rock photographer Ed Colver. "The stark front cover caused heads to turn at the Gavin Report and Billboard , as the Long Ryders looked so unlike the synth-pop acts of the era," Griffin said. [4] The idea behind the cover, according to Griffin, "was me and photographer Ed Colver deciding to send a signal ... I always bought anything I saw if it looked '66." [13] Colver also subsequently shot the cover for the band's Native Sons album.

10-5-60 was well received by critics in both the US and the UK. [17] At the time of release, critic Robert Christgau gave it a B rating, stating: "What Jason & the Scorchers are to punk these guys are to new wave, with a soul Gram Parsons fans will recognize." [14] In a retrospective review, AllMusic's Mark Deming rated it three stars out of five, noting the Long Ryders' obvious affection for the Byrds, but adding that "they sound less like a throwback than some vintage band who somehow passed through a wrinkle in time and ended up in 1983." He also called the title track one of "the most exciting performances to come out of the '80s garage revival." [8]

10-5-60 was reissued on vinyl in 1987 by the British Zippo label, adding the bonus track, "The Trip". [21] The 10-5-60 tracks (including "The Trip") were later added as bonus tracks on CD reissues of the album Native Sons . [22] [23]

He became a record producer, predominantly for Los Angeles area bands like The Pop, 20/20, The Runaways, Concrete Blonde, Jumpin' Jimes, The Long Ryders, The Three O'Clock, The Tearaways, The Conditionz, Adicts, Durango 95, Leslie Pereira and The Lazy Heroes, and Kristian Hoffman. He is the brother of Concrete Blonde guitarist James Mankey.

Albert Sidney "Sid" Griffin is an American singer, songwriter, guitarist-mandolinist, bandleader, and author who lives in London, England. He led the Long Ryders band in the 1980s, founded the Coal Porters group in the 1990s, has recorded several solo albums and is the author of volumes on Bob Dylan, Gram Parsons and bluegrass music.
Native Sons is the debut album by American band the Long Ryders, released in October 1984 by record label Frontier. The album and the single "I Had a Dream" reached number 1 and 4 on the UK Indie Chart, respectively. Musically, the album fuses 1960s style garage rock and folk rock with country rock. Rolling Stone's David Fricke described Native Sons as an album "where Nashville, ’77 London and the mid-Sixties Sunset Strip converge in songs of pioneer aspiration and outlaw bonding." Native Sons features former Byrds member Gene Clark guesting on the track "Ivory Tower".
Psychedelic Country Soul is the fourth studio album by American band the Long Ryders, released on February 15, 2019, through Omnivore Recordings in the US and Cherry Red Records in the UK. It is the band's first album in 32 years with Two-Fisted Tales their last release in 1987.
State of Our Union is the second studio album by American band the Long Ryders, released in September 1985 by Island Records. It was a success at college and alternative radio stations in the US and reached number 66 on the UK Albums Chart as well as number 2 on the UK Country Chart. The single "Looking for Lewis and Clark" peaked at number 59 on the UK Singles Chart but was never released commercially in the US.
Two-Fisted Tales is the third studio album by American band the Long Ryders, released in 1987 by Island Records. It was their last studio album for 32 years until 2019's Psychedelic Country Soul. The album yielded two singles, a cover of NRBQ’s "I Want You Bad" and "Gunslinger Man". On Two-Fisted Tales, the Long Ryders moved further away from their country rock origins towards a more college rock direction.
Final Wild Songs is a four-CD compilation box set by American band the Long Ryders, released in 2016 by Cherry Red Records. It collects the debut EP 10-5-60, the three studio albums Native Sons, State of Our Union and Two-Fisted Tales, as well as a number of rare and unreleased tracks, including a full 1985 live set recorded for radio broadcast in the Netherlands.
Looking for Lewis and Clark: the Long Ryders Anthology is a two-CD compilation album by American band the Long Ryders, released in July 1998 on PolyGram's Chronicles label. It collects 40 tracks spanning the band's career from 1983 to 1987, including B-sides, demos and live recordings, many of which are previously unreleased. All tracks have been remastered for this release and the album's booklet includes sleevenotes by Rolling Stone's David Fricke. The long version of "Looking for Lewis and Clark" from the 10-inch single release makes its first appearance on CD here.

The Best of the Long Ryders is a compilation album by American band the Long Ryders, released on 14 June 2004 by Prima Records. Spanning the Long Ryder's career from 1983 to 1987, the album features 18 tracks from the band's first three studio albums and their debut EP, a 1987 live recording, and three non-album tracks. All tracks have been remastered for this release by Jerome Schmitt and Sid Griffin in April 2004.
Gregory Michael Sowders is an American drummer and music publisher. He is a founding member of alternative country and Paisley Underground band the Long Ryders, and Senior Vice President and Head of A&R at Warner Chappell Music in the United States.
Thomas Howard Stevens was an American bassist, guitarist, singer, and songwriter, often associated with the Paisley Underground and alternative country movements as bassist for roots rock band the Long Ryders. He was a member of Magi and Danny & Dusty, and recorded as a solo artist. In his solo work, Stevens incorporated elements of folk rock, country, psychedelia and garage rock into his music, and released what music reviewer Stewart Lee calls "fascinatingly different solo albums." Stevens was based in Los Angeles in the 1980s, but later returned to his native Indiana.
