18 February – Sir Humphrey Winch, retiring Lord Chief Justice of Ireland, is sent to London with draft legislation.^[1]
7 May – surrender and regrant in Counties Carlow, Wexford and Wicklow is authorised.^[1]
June – Roman Catholic priest Patrick O'Loughran returns from exile.
11 July – 21 October: Lord Carew is in Ireland (as authorised in June) to inquire into its government and report on prospects for the plantation of Ulster (August).^[1]
19 August – the Church of Ireland Bishop of Elphin, John Lynch, resigns, declaring himself a Roman Catholic, and is succeeded by Edward King (consecrated December).
25 November – the nobility and gentry claim the right to have advance sight of bills intended for the Parliament of Ireland.^[1]
Giolla Brighde Ó hEoghusa (Bonaventura Ó hEoghusa or O'Hussey)'s An Teagasc Criosdaidhe is published in Antwerp, the first devotional work in Irish.

Irish Catholic Martyrs were 24 Irish men and women who have been beatified or canonized for both a life of heroic virtue and for dying for their Catholic faith between King Henry VIII and Catholic Emancipation in 1829. The canonization of Oliver Plunkett, who had been executed in London, as one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales in 1975 raised considerable public interest in other Irishmen and Irishwomen who had similarly died for their Catholic faith in the 16th and 17th centuries. On 22 September 1992 Pope John Paul II beatified an additional 17 martyrs and assigned June 20, the anniversary of the 1584 martyrdom of Archbishop Dermot O'Hurley, as their feast day. Many other causes for Roman Catholic Sainthood, however, remain under investigation.
