Billie Jean Moffitt and Karen Susman were the defending champions, but Susman did not compete as she was expecting her first child. [1] Moffitt partnered with Carole Caldwell but lost in the second round to Deidre Catt and Liz Starkie.

Karen Susman is a retired female tennis player from the United States. She won the 1962 women's singles title at Wimbledon, defeating Věra Pužejová Suková in the final 6–4, 6–4, but did not defend her title in 1963. She won three Grand Slam women's doubles titles, all with Billie Jean King. She also won the 1960 Wimbledon junior girls' singles title.

The 1963 Wimbledon Championships took place on the outdoor grass courts at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, United Kingdom. It was the 77th staging of the Wimbledon Championships, and the third Grand Slam tennis event of 1963. The tournament which was scheduled from 24 June until 6 July was played in cold and wet weather conditions. Play on the final Saturday was cancelled due to rain and the women's singles, the men's and women's doubles and the mixed doubles finals were concluded on Monday, 8 July. This edition of the tournament saw the introduction of the regulation that player's clothing must be predominantly white.

Sixth-seeded Maria Bueno defeated Darlene Hard in the final, 6–4, 6–3 to win the ladies' singles tennis title at the 1959 Wimbledon Championships. Althea Gibson was the reigning champion, but was ineligible to compete after turning professional.

Maria Bueno successfully defended her title, defeating Sandra Reynolds in the final, 8–6, 6–0 to win the ladies' singles tennis title at the 1960 Wimbledon Championships.

Angela Mortimer defeated Christine Truman in the final, 4–6, 6–4, 7–5 to win the ladies' singles tennis title at the 1961 Wimbledon Championships. It was the last all-British final to date. Maria Bueno was the reigning champion, but did not defend her title due to jaundice.
