Cameroon also attempted to call up Joseph Yegba Maya of Olympique Marseille to the squad, but Marseille's demands for financial compensation were too high.

Marcel Desailly is a former professional footballer, capable of playing as both centre-back or defensive midfielder. The Ghana national football team represents Ghana in men's international football. The team is named the Black Stars after the Black Star of Africa in the flag of Ghana. It is governed by the Ghana Football Association, the governing body for football in Ghana. Prior to 1957, it played as the Gold Coast.

The 1963 African Cup of Nations was the fourth edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, the association football championship of Africa (CAF). For the third consecutive time the hosts won the African Cup. The format was changed to two groups of 3 teams each, with the group winners playing the final, and the runners-up playing the third place playoff. The final in Accra on 1 December saw the hosts beating Sudan 3–0 to win the title.

Dan Kayede is a Ghanaian former professional footballer who played for Accra Great Olympics F.C. At the international level, he is known for his involvement in the squad that won the 1978 African Cup of Nations.

P.S.K. Paha is a Ghanaian former professional footballer and manager. During his playing career Paha played as a defender specifically as a right-back for Sekondi Eleven Wise and Great Ambassadors. At the international level, he is known for being part of the squad that won the 1978 African Cup of Nations.
