Claughaun entered the championship as the defending champions, however, they were beaten by South Liberties in a semi-final replay. [2] [3]

The final was played on 10 December 1972 at the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick, between South Liberties and Patrickswell, in what was their first ever meeting in the final. South Liberties won the match by 4–08 to 1–05 to claim their fourth championship title overall and a first title in 82 years. [4] [5]
