The 1973 European Amateur Boxing Championships were held in Belgrade, Yugoslavia from 1 to 9 June. The 20th edition of the bi-annual competition was organised by the European governing body for amateur boxing, EABA. There were 148 fighters from 22 countries participating.

Boxing at the 1984 Summer Olympics took place in the Memorial Sports Arena in Los Angeles, California, United States. The boxing schedule began on July 29 and ended on August 11. Twelve boxing events were contested with the participation of 354 fighters from 81 countries. A Soviet-led boycott resulted in the withdrawals of the Soviet Union, Cuba, East Germany, Bulgaria and other Eastern Bloc nations from boxing competitions.

Ljubiša Simić is a former boxer from Yugoslavia, who competed in two Summer Olympics for his native country: in 1984 and in 1988. In both occasions he had an early exit from the tournament. Simić became professional in 1993, and recorded thirteen wins and three losses.
Aleksandr Borisovich Lebziak is a Russian boxer, a three-time Olympian who won the Gold medal in the men's Light Heavyweight (81 kg) category at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. He beat Rudolf Kraj in the final.
Mate Parlov was a Croatian-Yugoslavian boxer and Olympic gold medalist who was European and World Champion as an amateur and as a professional. Parlov was voted the Best Balkan Athlete of the Year for 1974.
Patrizio Oliva is an Italian former professional boxer, who won the gold medal in the light welterweight division at the 1980 Moscow Olympics as an amateur and the WBA light welterweight title as a professional.
Aleksandar Khristov is a retired boxer from Bulgaria, who became world champion and represented his native country at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. There he won the silver medal in the bantamweight division. He also won three medals in the European Amateur Boxing Championships, including gold at the 1987 European Amateur Boxing Championships in Turin, Italy.
Aziz Salihu is one of the best retired Super heavyweight boxer of Kosovar Albanian descent. He represented Yugoslavia at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California, and won the bronze medal in the super heavyweight division, after a loss in the semifinals at the hands of Tyrell Biggs of the United States. Salihu also competed at the 1980 (Moscow) and 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, where he was eliminated in the quarterfinals.
The Men's 1978 World Amateur Boxing Championships were held in Belgrade, Yugoslavia from May 6 to 20. The second edition of this competition, held two years before the Summer Olympics in Moscow, Soviet Union was organised by the world governing body for amateur boxing AIBA.
The European Amateur Boxing Championships is the highest competition for boxing amateurs in Europe, organised by the continent's governing body EUBC, which stands for the European Boxing Confederation. The first edition of the tournament took place in 1924, although the first 'competitive' championships were hosted by the city of Stockholm (Sweden) in 1925.

Marijan Beneš was a Yugoslavian boxer from Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina. He is considered one of the best boxers in Yugoslav history. After a brilliant amateur career, culminating in the gold medal in European Amateur Boxing Championships in Belgrade, he turned professional in 1977, and won the European Boxing Union title in the light welterweights in 1979. Next year he fought for the WBA World super welterweight title but lost to title holder Ayub Kalule on points. Beneš withdrew from the ring in 1983, after a severe eye injury. In 2020 he was named as the best Bosnian boxer in 20th century.
Cengiz Koç is a German heavyweight boxer of Turkish descent who won the bronze medal at the 2000 European amateur championships. He has also won a European championship in amateur kickboxing.
Emil Schulz was a German amateur boxer and five-time national champion, who lost only 21 of his 223 fights. He competed for the United Team of Germany at the 1964 Olympics in the middleweight division and won a silver medal. He also won a bronze medal at the 1963 European Amateur Boxing Championships, representing West Germany.

W.A.K.O. World Championships 2001 were the joint thirteenth world kickboxing championships hosted by the W.A.K.O. organization. It was the second championships to be held in Serbia and Montenegro and was open to amateur men and women across the world.
W.A.K.O. European Championships 2004 in Budva were the joint seventeenth European championships and were the fourth W.A.K.O. championships to be held in Serbia and Montenegro/Yugoslavia. The event was open to around 300 amateur men and women from 26 nations from across Europe.
