The Men's 1981 European Amateur Boxing Championships were held in Tampere, Finland from May 2 to May 10, 1981. László Papp was a Hungarian professional boxer from Budapest. He was left-handed and won gold medals in the 1948 Summer Olympics in London, the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, and the 1956 Summer Olympics held in Melbourne, Australia. In his final Olympic competition he became the first boxer in Olympic history to win three successive gold medals. The Men's 1993 World Amateur Boxing Championships were held in Tampere, Finland from May 7 to 16. The seventh edition of this competition, held nearly a year after the Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, was organised by the Tampere Boxing Association, member of the Finnish Boxing Association under the influence of the world's governing body for amateur boxing AIBA. The 1993 World Championships witnessed the introduction of publicised scores at the end of each round.

Cecilia Carmen Linda Brækhus is a Norwegian professional boxer and former kickboxer. She reigned as the undisputed female welterweight boxing champion from 2014 to 2020, and is the first woman in any weight class to hold the WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO titles simultaneously. Brækhus is also one of only 11 boxers in history, male or female, to hold all four major world titles simultaneously. She also held the IBO title from 2016 to 2020, and is currently the interim WBC super welterweight champion.

Juho Tolppola is a Finnish professional boxer who has challenged twice for the European super-lightweight title in 2008. As an amateur he is a three-time Finnish national champion and a bronze medallist at the 2000 European Championships. From 2015 to 2017, Tolppola served a two-year ban from boxing due to doping.

The 2016 AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships was held in Saint Petersburg, Russia, from 17 to 26 November 2016. The competition was under the supervision Brandon smith of the world's governing body for amateur boxing AIBA and is the junior version of the World Amateur Boxing Championships. Hannu Sakari Vuorinen was a Finnish professional boxer who competed from 1988 to 1990. As an amateur, he competed in the men's light welterweight event at the 1984 Summer Olympics and won a gold medal at the 1984 Nordic Championships.
