The men's team tournament at the 1979 WBF World Championships was held from 10 to 15 June 1979 at the Hangzhou Gymnasium in Hangzhou, China. Originally, 16 teams from Asia and Africa competed in the championships.

Zambia withdrew from the tournament, leaving only 15 countries in the men's team tournament.

Draw

The group stage consists of 4 groups, Group 1, Group 2, Group 3 and Group 4. [1] The first-placed teams in each group will advance to the semi-finals while the rest will compete in the classification rounds.

Rudy Gunawan is a former Indonesian badminton player who played between 1980s and 1990s. He is arguably one of the best doubles players ever to play for Indonesia. Rudy Gunawan won various international championships, both in the men's doubles and mixed doubles events. He has paired up with players such as Eddy Hartono, Rosiana Tendean, Bambang Suprianto, and Ricky Subagja. He was on the Thomas Cup team of Indonesia five times but only won gold in 1994 and 1996. In addition, he helped strengthen the Indonesian team in the race for 1989, Sudirman Cup.

The 1986 Thomas Cup & Uber Cup was the 14th tournament of Thomas Cup and the 11th tournament of Uber Cup, the most important badminton team competitions in the world. The tournament took place in Jakarta, Indonesia from 22 April to 4 May 1986. China won its second title in the Thomas Cup and in the Uber Cup, both after beating Indonesia in the final round.
