The 44th Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature was held to commemorate the memory of Don Carlos Palanca Sr. through an endeavor that would promote education and culture in the country. This year saw the inclusion of a new category, Dulang Pampelikula [Screenplay], for the Filipino Division. [1]

The Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature, popularly known as the Palanca Awards, are a set of literary awards for Philippine writers. Usually referred to as the "Pulitzer Prize of the Philippines", it is the country's highest literary honor in terms of prestige. Winning works are entered in the competition either as previously published pieces or in manuscript form. Ruth Elynia S. Mabanglo is a retired professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She was the coordinator for the Filipino and Philippine Literature Program. Her most recent publications were "Balada ni Lola Amonita" and "The Ballad of Lola Amonita" in Babaylan: An Anthology of Filipina and Filipina American Writers, edited by Nick Carbó and Eileen Tabios and published by Aunt Lute Books in the year 2000.

The 57th Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature was held on September 1, 2007, at The Peninsula Manila in Makati. Senator Mar Roxas was Guest of Honor and Speaker at this year’s awarding ceremony. This year saw the discontinuation of the Dulang Pantelebisyon category in the Filipino Division, after seventeen years. Also discontinued is the Future Fiction category, English and Filipino, after seven years.

The 66th Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature was held on September 2, 2016, at the The Peninsula Manila in Makati. The awarding body received almost a thousand entries this year in 20 categories. Antonio “Tony” Mabesa was Guest of Honor and Speaker at this year’s awarding ceremony.
