The 1996 Benson & Hedges Cup was the twenty-fifth edition of cricket's Benson & Hedges Cup. It was an English limited overs county cricket tournament which was held between 26 April and 13 July 1996. [3]

Contents

The competition was won by Lancashire County Cricket Club for a record fourth time, defeating Northamptonshire County Cricket Club by 31 runs in the final at Lord's on 13 July 1996.

Format

At the TCCB's winter meeting on 13 December 1995, it was agreed to reduce the format of the cup from 55 to 50 overs a side. [4]

The 1996 English cricket season was the 97th in which the County Championship had been an official competition. England hosted tours by India and Pakistan, who each played three Tests and three ODIs. However, against the Pakistanis England lost 2–0 in the Tests, and had to console themselves with a 2–1 ODI series victory.

Michael Burns is an English first-class list cricket umpire and former first-class cricketer who played county cricket for Warwickshire and Somerset in a first-class career which spanned from 1992 until 2005. He also played Minor Counties cricket for Cumberland and Cornwall. An adaptable cricketer, he appeared for Cumberland and Warwickshire as a wicket-keeper, but when he moved to Somerset he developed into an aggressive batsman who bowled at medium-pace when needed.

Neil Terence O'Brien is a former English cricketer. O'Brien was a right-handed batsman who bowled right-arm medium pace. He was born in Heaton Moor, Lancashire.

Ian Cockbain was an English cricketer. He was born in Bootle, Lancashire.

The 1982 Benson & Hedges Cup Final was a one-day cricket match between Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club and Somerset County Cricket Club played on 24 July 1982 at Lord's in London. It was the eleventh final of the Benson & Hedges Cup. Somerset were holders, after beating Surrey in the previous year's final, while Nottinghamshire were making their debut in a one-day final, though they had won the 1981 County Championship.
