It was the 113th edition of the Canada Masters and was part of the Tennis Masters Series of the 2002 ATP Tour and of Tier I of the 2002 WTA Tour. The men's event took place at the National Tennis Centre in Toronto in Canada from July 29 through August 4, 2002 and the women's event at the du Maurier Stadium in Montreal in Canada from August 10 through August 18, 2002.
The men's draw featured World No. 1 and Wimbledon champion Lleyton Hewitt, ATP No. 2 and Australian Open runner-up Marat Safin, and ATP No. 3 and Rome finalist Tommy Haas. Other top players present were Indian Wells finalist Tim Henman, French Open doubles champion Yevgeny Kafelnikov, Albert Costa, Andre Agassi and Juan Carlos Ferrero.
The women's draw was led by new World No. 1, French Open and Wimbledon winner and defending champion Serena Williams, WTA No. 3 and Australian Open champion Jennifer Capriati, Sarasota and Birmingham titlist and Manhattan Beach doubles champion Jelena Dokić. Other top seeds were Hamburg winner Kim Clijsters, Berlin champion Justine Henin, Martina Hingis, Amélie Mauresmo and Daniela Hantuchová.

Paola Suárez is a retired tennis player from Argentina. She was one of the most prominent women's doubles players throughout the early and mid-2000s, winning eight Grand Slam titles, all of them with Virginia Ruano Pascual, and holding the No. 1 doubles ranking for 87 non-consecutive weeks. She was also a singles top ten player and semifinalist at the 2004 French Open.

The tournament was held between November 4 and November 10, 2003. First-seeded Kim Clijsters won the singles event and earned $1,000,030 first-prize money as well as 485 ranking points. With her victory Clijsters became the first female tennis player to earn $US4 million in a season. For the first time since 1978 a round robin system was used, after the men's Tennis Masters Cup. Two groups of four players were formed and each contender had to play three matches. Also, for singles, instead of the top sixteen players qualifying, only top eight qualified for the WTA Tour Championships. For doubles, the top four pairs pairs qualified for the WTA Tour Championships, but still continued with the single elimination format.

The WTA Tour is the elite tour for professional women's tennis organised by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA).
