Amélie Mauresmo defeated Justine Henin-Hardenne in the final, 6–1, 2–0 ret., to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2006 Australian Open. It was her first major title. The final marked the third all-Russian final in major singles history, and the first since the 2004 US Open. It was Safina's third runner-up finish in as many major finals. The match was also the conclusion of a series of finals between the pair during that clay court season, as they each claimed the Stuttgart and Rome titles over each other.

Serena Williams defeated her sister, the two-time defending champion Venus Williams, in the final, 7–6(7–3), 6–2 to win the ladies' singles tennis title at the 2009 Wimbledon Championships. It was her third Wimbledon singles title and eleventh major singles title overall.
