The 2005 French Open was the 109th edition of the tournament. Rafael Nadal, seeded fourth at his first French Open, was a strong favorite to win the men's title after winning the Monte Carlo and Rome Masters, with Guillermo Coria, a 2004 finalist and 2005 runner-up to Nadal in both Monaco and Rome, calling Nadal the best clay-court player in the world prior to the tournament. After defeating top seed Roger Federer in the semi-finals, Nadal defeated Argentina's Mariano Puerta to claim his first French Open title, and the first of four won consecutively from 2005 until 2008. Nadal would go on to win the tournament a record fourteen times.
The girls' singles tournament of the 2006 US Open was won by Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who beat Tamira Paszek in the final by 3–6, 6–4, 7–5.
At the 2006 US Open, the winner of the girls' doubles competition was the team of Buzărnescu and Olaru, both from Romania, who were seeded second in the tournament. The runners-up were Sharon Fichman and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, from Canada and Russia, respectively, who were seeded first. The other semifinalists were the teams of Kramperová and Vaňková, from the Czech Republic, and Klaffner and Paszek, from Austria. Neither of these teams had been seeded.
Ana Ivanovic defeated Dinara Safina in the final, 6–4, 6–3 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2008 French Open. It was her first and only major singles title. With the win, Ivanovic also became the world No. 1; Maria Sharapova, Jelena Janković and Svetlana Kuznetsova were also in contention for the top ranking. Ivanovic dropped only one set during the tournament, to Janković in the semifinals. This marked the last time Ivanovic would reach a major quarterfinal until the 2012 US Open.
Maria Sharapova defeated Ana Ivanovic in the final, 7–5, 6–3 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2008 Australian Open. It was her third major singles title. She did not lose a set during the tournament or face a tiebreak in any set. Sharapova also became the first Russian woman to win the title. It was Ivanovic's second runner-up finish in as many major finals, though she would win the French Open a few months later.
The 2008 Qatar Ladies Open singles was the singles event of the 2008 Qatar Ladies Open, a WTA Tier I tennis tournament held in February. Justine Henin was the defending champion, but she chose not to participate that year.
Serena Williams defeated Jelena Janković in the final, 6–4, 7–5 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2008 US Open. It was her third US Open singles title and ninth major singles title overall. With the win, she regained the world No. 1 singles ranking for the first time since 2003. This was also her second US Open and third major overall won without losing a set during the tournament. Three of the top four seeds were in contention for the No. 1 ranking at the start of the tournament.

The 2009 Sony Ericsson Open women's singles was the women's singles event of the 2009 Sony Ericsson Open, a WTA Premier Mandatory tennis tournament held in Key Biscayne, Florida in late March and early April. World No. 1 Serena Williams was the defending champion and attempting to win a record sixth title at the tournament, but she lost in the final to Victoria Azarenka, 6–3, 6–1. Azarenka won her third WTA singles title and first at the Premier or above level.

Krejčíková became the first woman to win both the singles and doubles tournaments at a major since Serena Williams at the 2016 Wimbledon Championships, and the first to do so at the French Open since Mary Pierce in 2000, making her the seventh woman to accomplish the sweep in French Open history.
