The 2006 Waterford Senior Hurling Championship was the 106th staging of the Waterford Senior Hurling Championship since its establishment by the Waterford County Board in 1897.

The Waterford Senior Hurling Championship is an annual hurling competition organised by the Waterford County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association since 1897 for the top hurling teams in the county of Waterford in Ireland.

The Waterford County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) or Waterford GAA is one of the 32 county boards of the GAA in Ireland, and is responsible for all levels of Gaelic games in County Waterford. The County Board is also responsible for the Waterford inter-county teams. The county board's offices are based at Walsh Park in the city of Waterford. The Waterford County Board was founded in 1886.

The 1897 Waterford Senior Hurling Championship was the inaugural staging of the Waterford Senior Hurling Championship since its establishment by the Waterford County Board.

On 22 October 2006, Mount Sion won the championship after a 2-13 to 0-12 defeat of Ballygunner in the final. [1] This was their 35th championship title overall and their first title since 2004.

Although technically separate from the school, the club still maintains a close relationship with the school, sharing the same sports facilities in the city.

Ballygunner GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) club located in the parish of St Mary's Ballygunner in Waterford City, Ireland. The club is exclusively concerned with hurling. The club is one of the most successful in Waterford with a number of county titles and have produced many great players for Waterford such as Paul Flynn, Fergal Hartley, Billy O Sullivan, Pauric Mahoney to name but a few. Eoin Kelly is an Irish hurler who played as a full-forward for the Waterford senior team. He joined the team in 2001 and was a regular member of the starting fifteen until his retirement in 2012.

Ken McGrath is an Irish hurler and current hurling selector who played as a centre-back for the Waterford senior team. He joined the team in 1996 and was a regular member of the starting fifteen until his retirement in 2011.
