The inaugural IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy was hosted by Chile in April 2008. The eight-team competition for national men under-20 sides is the second tier of the IRB Junior World Championship, which replaced the U19 & U21 World Championships.

The New Zealand national under-20 rugby union team is the representative rugby union team from New Zealand. It replaced the two former age grade teams: the under-19s and the under-21s. The team has yet to make their way back to the top competition.

The World Rugby Junior Player of the Year is an accolade awarded annually by the World Rugby. It is awarded to the player of the tournament in that year's World Rugby Under 20 Championship. It replaces the now defunct U21 Player of the Year and the U19 Player of the Year. From 2008 until 2013, it was the IRB Junior Player of the Year. Since 2014, following the International Rugby Board becoming World Rugby, the award has been titled the World Rugby Junior Player of the Year.

The Junior Wallabies is the national under-20 team that represents Australia playing rugby union. The team has been competing at the annual World Rugby U20 Championship since it began in 2008, replacing the previously held under-19 and under-21 championships. The team also competes at the Oceania U20 Championship as of 2015.

The South Africa national under-20 rugby union team are South Africa's junior team at national level. They have been competing in the World Rugby Under 20 Championship since its inception in 2008. This Under-20 tournament replaced the previously-held Under-19 and Under-21 Rugby World Championships. Prior to 2018, it had been the country's "next senior" (second-level) 15-man national side, but World Rugby no longer allows member unions to designate age-grade sides as "next senior" teams.

The team also competes at the Oceania U20 Championship as of 2015.

The Scotland national under-20 rugby union team participates in the World Rugby Under 20 Championship. Their highest placement is 5th which they achieved in the 2017 World Rugby Under 20 Championship.

The Italy national under-20 rugby union team has competed in both the IRB Junior World Championship and IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy. They were one of four teams relegated in 2009 to the Junior World Trophy after finishing at the bottom of the tournament. They were again promoted to the 2011 IRB Junior World Championship after winning the 2010 IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy.

The Japan national under-20 rugby union team is Japan's junior national team in rugby union.

Branco Bewinn Nazeem du Preez is a former South African rugby union player, playing with the South Africa national rugby sevens team. He is a utility back, but usually plays as a scrum-half for the Blitzbokke. Du Preez retired as the most capped South African Rugby Sevens player.

The Cook Islands national Under 20 rugby team is for Cook Islands rugby union players aged 20 or under on January 1 of the year during which they are selected. The team has played at the World Rugby U20 Trophy and also competes at the Oceania U20 Championship.

The Australian national under-19 rugby union team formerly represented Australia on a national level in age graded rugby union. The team competed in all four editions of the Under 19 Rugby World Championship, winning the title in 2006, and finishing third in 2005 and 2007.
