It was his sixth Wimbledon title and record-breaking 15th major title overall, passing Pete Sampras' all-time record. It was the longest men's singles major final in history with 77 games, breaking the record of 71 games set at the 1927 Australian Open. The match also had the longest fifth set (16–14) in a major men's singles final, surpassing the 11–9 fifth set in the 1927 French Open final. The match took 4 hours and 17 minutes to complete, and the fifth set alone lasted 95 minutes. It was a repeat of the 2004 and 2005 finals, where Federer also beat Roddick to win the title. This was Federer's 11th grass-court title, surpassing the previous record held by Sampras (10). Notably, Roddick lost despite only having his serve broken once, in the last game of the match. He was also the first Scot to win the Wimbledon men's singles title since Harold Mahony in 1896. Djokovic advanced to the final after a five-set semifinal against Juan Martín del Potro. At 4 hours and 43 minutes this match was the then-longest semifinal ever contested at Wimbledon, breaking the previous record set by Boris Becker and Ivan Lendl in 1989.

Filip Peliwo was the defending champion, but was no longer eligible to compete in junior tennis, and thus could not defend his title.

It was his third Wimbledon title and ninth major title overall. Nadal was attempting to become the first man in the Open Era to achieve a double career Grand Slam.

Roger Federer defeated Marin Čilić in the final, 6–3, 6–1, 6–4 to win the Gentlemen's Singles title at the 2017 Wimbledon Championships. It was his record eighth Wimbledon men's singles title and 19th major title overall. Federer also became the second man in the Open Era, after Björn Borg in 1976, to win Wimbledon without losing a set. This was Federer's 70th appearance at a major, tying the record for male players, and a record-breaking 11th men's singles final at the same major tournament. In addition, with his third-round win over Mischa Zverev, Federer won his 317th Grand Slam singles match, surpassing Serena Williams' record. With his first-round win, Federer surpassed Jimmy Connors' record for most match wins at Wimbledon. In the same match, he hit his 10000th ace, becoming only the third man to do so. It was his fourth Wimbledon title and 13th major title overall, passing Roy Emerson to outright fourth place on the all time men's singles major wins list. The win was also Djokovic's first title in over 12 months, his previous win having been at Eastbourne on July 1, 2017, and returned him to the top 10 in rankings. The Men's Singles competition was contested by all but one of the top 20 male players in the ATP as of 25 June 2018.

Mike Bryan and Jack Sock were the defending champions, but Sock could not participate due to injury. Mike Bryan played alongside his brother Bob, but lost in the third round to Nicolas Mahut and Édouard Roger-Vasselin.

Rafael Nadal defeated Daniil Medvedev in the final, 7–5, 6–3, 5–7, 4–6, 6–4 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2019 US Open. It was his fourth US Open title and 19th major title overall. Nadal's victory meant that every Grand Slam title since the beginning of 2017 had been won by either himself (5), Novak Djokovic (4) or Roger Federer (3). This was the first time since 2006–08 that Djokovic, Federer, and Nadal had claimed all four Grand Slam singles titles in three consecutive years.
