A dragon boat is a human-powered watercraft originating from the Pearl River Delta region of China's southern Guangdong Province. These were made of teak,but in other parts of China different kinds of wood are used. It is one of a family of traditional paddled long boats found throughout Asia,Africa,the Pacific islands,and Puerto Rico. The sport of dragon boat racing has its roots in an ancient folk ritual of contending villagers,which dates back 2000 years throughout southern China,and even further to the original games of Olympia in ancient Greece. Both dragon boat racing and the ancient Olympiad included aspects of religious observances and community celebrations,along with competitions.
A lifeguard is a rescuer who supervises the safety and rescue of swimmers,surfers,and other water sports participants such as in a swimming pool,water park,beach,spa,river and lake. Lifeguards are trained in swimming and CPR/AED first aid,certified in water rescue using a variety of aids and equipment depending on requirements of their particular venue. In some areas,lifeguards are part of the emergency services system to incidents and in some communities,lifeguards may function as the primary EMS provider.
The Canadian International Dragon Boat Festival or Concord Pacific Dragon Boat Festival takes place every June on the waters and shoreside of False Creek in Vancouver,British Columbia,Canada. It is North America's largest and most competitive dragon boat festival with over 200 crews competing from around the world,with roots stemming from Expo 86. The Concord Pacific Dragon Boat Festival is run by the Canadian International Dragon Boat Festival Society.
The Highland Towers collapse occurred on 11 December 1993 in Taman Hillview,Ulu Klang,Selangor,Malaysia. Tower Block 1 collapsed from a major landslide caused by heavy rains that burst diversion pipes. The Highland Towers consisted of three 12-storey buildings or "blocks". The collapse of Block 1 resulted in 48 deaths. Residents of the other two blocks and neighbouring establishments were evacuated due to safety concerns.
Saint John's School of Alberta (SJSA) was a small private boys' boarding school in Genesee,Alberta,Canada which operated from 1968 to 2008,the second of three such schools founded on conservative Anglican ideas and the notion that children were not challenged by present-day society. The Boys in Red accident[a] occurred on January 12,2008,just outside the city of Bathurst,New Brunswick,Canada. A semi-trailer truck and a van carrying the basketball team from Bathurst High School collided,which killed seven students,the wife of the coach,and injured four other occupants in the van. It was the deadliest transportation accident in New Brunswick since 1989,when a logging truck tipped onto a hayride in Cormier Village,killing 13. It was the deadliest bus accident involving a sports team in Canada until the Humboldt Broncos bus crash in April 2018.
The Thekkady boat disaster occurred on 30 September 2009,when the double-decker passenger boat Jalakanyaka sank in Lake Thekkady,Periyar National Park,Kerala,India. When the boat capsized,45 tourists died,most of them from Delhi and Kolkata. A total of 82 people were on the boat. The boat's helmsman,Victor Samuel,and another crew member were arrested on 5 October. It is the deadliest maritime accident reported in Kerala.

The incident was the worst civilian maritime disaster in Australia in more than a century.

The 2011 PræstøFjord dragon boat accident occurred on February 11,2011,north of Præstø,Denmark. The incident involved 13 students and two teachers from Lundby Efterskole - a local continuation high school. The boat capsized due to the wind. This incident killed one of the teachers and injured most of the students,leaving several of them in permanent care. The body of the teacher,who was not wearing a lifejacket,was found over seven weeks later on April 3.
The Mengalum Island boat accident is occurred on 28 January 2017,when a catamaran passenger ferry sank in the South China Sea off Mengalum Island in Sabah,Malaysia. The boat was carrying 27 Chinese tourists,of whom 22 were rescued,four confirmed dead,and five still missing.
On the evening of July 19,2018,a duck boat operated by Ride the Ducks sank on Table Rock Lake in the Ozarks near Branson,Missouri,in the United States. The amphibious vehicle sank with 31 people on board,leaving 17 dead,during high winds associated with nearby severe thunderstorms as part of a significant derecho and tornado outbreak.
The sinking of MV Conception occurred on September 2,2019,when the 75-foot (23 m) dive boat caught fire and eventually sank off the coast of Santa Cruz Island,California,United States. The boat was anchored overnight at Platts Harbor,a small undeveloped bay on the island's north shore,with 33 passengers and 1 crew member asleep below decks when a fire broke out shortly after 3 a.m. Five crew members,whose sleeping quarters were on the top deck,survived while everyone else on board died. The crew members were forced by the fire to jump overboard but not before placing an initial mayday call to the Coast Guard and attempting to alert the passengers. The crew retrieved the Conception's skiff and motored to a nearby boat where a second radio dispatch was made. The rescue and recovery operations were coordinated by the United States Coast Guard.
On 26 May 2021,an overloaded and overcrowded vessel carrying at least 160 passengers broke into two and sank after hitting an object in the Nigerian part of the Niger River. The boat was travelling between Niger State and Wara in Kebbi State when it sank. The incident left at least 98 dead.
On 23 November 2007,a 22-member Singapore national dragon boat team capsized after colliding with a pontoon in TonléSap,Cambodia,leading to the deaths of five Singaporean dragon boat paddlers after they were sucked under the pontoon by strong water currents.
