The 2011 Bloomington Extreme season was the team's sixth season as a professional indoor football franchise and third in the Indoor Football League (IFL). One of twenty-two teams competing in the IFL for the 2011 season, the Bloomington, Illinois-based Bloomington Extreme were members of the Great Lakes Division of the United Conference.

The Cavalry became a charter member of the National Indoor Football League (NIFL) in 2001 following the original IFL's purchase by the Arena Football League's Orlando Predators. The Bloomington Edge was a professional indoor football team based in Bloomington, Illinois. While it was in operation, the team hosted home games at Grossinger Motors Arena. Originally named the Bloomington Extreme, the team was a member of United Indoor Football (UIF), and joined the Indoor Football League (IFL) in 2009 during the UIF and Intense Football League merger. They left the IFL for the Champions Professional Indoor Football League (CPIFL) in 2013, and in 2015 the CPIFL merged with the Lone Star Football League (LSFL) to create Champions Indoor Football (CIF), where Bloomington did not follow and joined X-League Indoor Football (X-League). Following the 2015 season the Edge joined the CIF. The Edge then announced it had rejoined the IFL for the 2018 season, but a court ruling prevented the team from joining the league until 2019, however, they were not included in that season's schedule.

The 2012 Indoor Football League season was the fourth season of the Indoor Football League (IFL). The league lost nine of its previous teams but gained three new teams. The three new teams were the Cedar Rapids Titans, New Mexico Stars and the Everett Raptors. The season kicked off on February 19, 2012, when the Chicago Slaughter beat the Bloomington Edge 50–34. For the 2012 season, the IFL switched to a two-conference format with no divisions, due, in large part, to the loss of all the Texas-based teams to the newly formed Lone Star Football League. The Wranglers brought attention to the league for offering a US$500,000 contract to unemployed wide receiver Terrell Owens to become the team's part-owner and wide receiver. Owens accepted the contract. ESPN3 carried Owens's debut game against the Wichita Wild. The front office of the league saw changes as well, as Commissioner Tommy Benizio resigned. The league appointed assistant commissioner Robert Loving as the interim Commissioner.

Michael Murray is an American college football coach. He is the head football coach for Elmhurst University, a position he has held since 2023. He was the head football coach for the University of Dubuque from 1997 to 1999, Benedictine University from 2000 to 2001, and the Bloomington Extreme of the Indoor Football League (IFL). He was also the head track and field coach for Illinois Wesleyan University from 1987 to 1996 and the head men's golf coach for North Central University from 2014 to 2015. He also coached football for Illinois Wesleyan, North Central (IL), Robert Morris (IL), and Roosevelt. He played college football and baseball for Illinois Wesleyan.
