Sam Querrey was the defending champion, but lost to Mardy Fish in the quarterfinals.
Andy Roddick won his third title at this event, and the 30th of his career, defeating Milos Raonic 7–6(9–7), 6–7(11–13), 7–5 in the final. Roddick made a diving forehand to break serve for the match on his fifth championship point. Roddick stated: "That's the best shot I've ever hit in my life, considering the circumstance." [1]

Sam Querrey had a tough road for his title defense – having to battle back from being down numerous times during his matches, but eventually, he successfully defended the title after defeating Andy Murray 5–7, 7–6(7–2), 6–3 in the final. Querrey saved a championship point while serving at 4–5 in the 2nd set. He had previously saved a match point in the semifinals against Janko Tipsarević, also during the 2nd set while serving at 4–5.

It was his first US Open title and ninth major title overall, completing the career Golden Slam. Nadal became the second man since Rod Laver in 1969 to win the French Open, Wimbledon Championships, and the US Open , as well as the first man in history to win the Surface Slam. He lost only one set during the tournament, to Djokovic in the final.

Novak Djokovic defeated Rafael Nadal in the final, 4–6, 6–3, 7–6(7–4) to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2011 Miami Masters. With the win, Djokovic completed the Sunshine Double, having also won Indian Wells the fortnight before. Djokovic's unbeaten streak to the start of the 2011 season was extended to 24–0, and an overall winning streak of 26 matches.

It was his first US Open title and fourth major title overall. Djokovic saved match points en route to the title, saving two against Roger Federer in the semifinals. This was the second consecutive US Open where Djokovic saved two match points against Federer to reach the final, and the fifth consecutive US Open where Djokovic and Federer played each other. With the loss, Federer failed to win a major in a calendar year for the first time since 2003. With the win, Djokovic became the most recent man to win Wimbledon, the Canadian Open, and the US Open in the same season, and the first since Federer in 2006.

It was his first major title, following four previous runner-up finishes. He became the first British man to win a singles major since Fred Perry in 1936, having been runner-up on four previous occasions. The final lasted 4 hours and 54 minutes, an Open Era record-equaling US Open final duration.
