The 2012 Extreme Sailing Series was the sixth year of the series and the second year of it being a fully global event. [1] The series started in Muscat, Oman on 28 February and ended in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on 29 November and was scheduled to take place in 8 cities and 3 continents. [2]
The starting act of the 2012 series was held in Muscat, Oman on the weekend of 28 February and 2 March 2012 and was won by Oman Air.
The second act of the series, which was held in Qingdao, China was held between 19–22 April 2012 and was won by The Wave, Muscat.
China entered a local 'wild card' entry into this act.
The third act of 2012 was held in Istanbul, Turkey on the weekend of 7–10 June 2012 and was won by The Wave, Muscat.
The fourth act, held between 5–8 July 2012, took place in Porto, Portugal and was won by The Wave, Muscat.
The fifth act of 2012 was in Cardiff, Wales, the first of a three-year deal to host the event there. [3] The event, originally scheduled to be held over the August bank holiday, actually took place the weekend after, between 31 August and 2 September 2012. This act was won by Oman Air.
Cardiff entered a local 'wildcard' team into this act.
Act 6, which was scheduled to take place between 13 and 16 September, did not take place as the Province of Trapani and the regional government of Sicily failed to execute their obligations necessary for hosting the event. [4]
The seventh act took place in Nice, France between 18–21 October 2012 and was won by Groupe Edmond de Rothschild. [5]
Act 8, which took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil between 29 November and 2 December 2012. As the final act of the series, a lot was in the balance as the whole series had been closely contested. The Wave, Muscat won the Brazilian act by 0.2 points, and also took the overall trophy. [6]
Brazil entered a local 'wildcard' team into this act.
Alinghi is a professional sports team that was created in 2000 by Ernesto Bertarelli in order to compete in the 31st America's Cup in Auckland, New Zealand.
Their team consisted of Ernesto Bertarelli (Skipper/Helm), Jean-Christophe Mourniac (Tactician), Pierre-Yves Jorand (Mainsail Trim), Nils Frei (Headsail Trim) and Yves Detry (Bowman).
GAC Pindar, in its second year sailing Extreme 40's, is a long-time sailing team competing in the World Match Racing Tour and supporting numerous sailors across all levels of the sport.
Their team consisted of Ian Williams/Andrew Walsh (Skipper/Helm), Anna Tunnicliffe (Tactician), Mark Bulkeley (Mainsail Trim), Adam Piggott (Headsail Trim) and Rick Peacock (Bowman).
A team from the Rothschild family, the Gitana Team started in 1876, and entered the Extreme Sailing Series for the first time in 2009.
Their team consisted of Pierre Pennec (Skipper/Helm), Arnaud Psarofaghis (Tactician), Hervé Cunningham/Hervé Cunningham (Mainsail Trim), Romain Petit (Headsail Trim) and Bernard Labro/Bernard Labro (Bowman).
This Oman Sail entry is sponsored by the national airline Oman Air.
Their team consisted of Morgan Larson (Skipper/Helm), Will Howden (Tactician), Charlie Ogletree (Mainsail Trim), Andy Maloney/Max Bulger (Headsail Trim) and Nasser Al Mashari (Bowman).
Red Bull, who have been in the series since 2009, finished 6th in the 2011 series.
The crew consisted of Roman Hagara (Skipper/Helm), Hans-Peter Steinacher (Tactician), Matthew Adams (Mainsail Trim), Pierre Le Clainche (Headsail Trim) and Graeme Spenceras (Bowman).
A new entry to the 2012 series, SAP Extreme Sailing Team is also an event partner and is the only team to have co-skippers in 2012.
The crew consisted of Jes Gram-Hansen (Co-skipper/Helm), Rasmus Kostner (Co-skipper/Tactician), Pete Cumming (Mainsail Trim), Mikkel Rossberg (Headsail Trim) and Jonas Hviid (Bowman).

A sailboat or sailing boat is a boat propelled partly or entirely by sails and is smaller than a sailing ship. Distinctions in what constitutes a sailing boat and ship vary by region and maritime culture.
A sailing vessel's rig is its arrangement of masts, sails and rigging. Examples include a schooner rig, cutter rig, junk rig, etc. A rig may be broadly categorized as "fore-and-aft", "square", or a combination of both. Within the fore-and-aft category there is a variety of triangular and quadrilateral sail shapes. Spars or battens may be used to help shape a given kind of sail. Each rig may be described with a sail plan—formally, a drawing of a vessel, viewed from the side.
Alinghi, or Alinghi Red Bull Racing because of the sports marketing branding by Red Bull, is the syndicate set up by Ernesto Bertarelli, racing under the colors of the Société Nautique de Genève, to challenge for the America's Cup, as well as other competitions. Bertarelli had raced several smaller yachts named Alinghi previously, but 2003 was his first attempt at the America's Cup. Alinghi challenged for and won the 2003 America's Cup in Auckland New Zealand and successfully defended it at the 2007 America's Cup in Valencia, Spain. Alinghi lost the America's Cup to the Golden Gate Yacht Club and their team BMW Oracle Racing in a Deed of Gift match in Valencia, Spain in February 2010.
Torben Schmidt Grael is one of the most well known Brazilian sailors, renowned in international competitions. A descendant of Danes, he was taken sailing by his grandfather at the age of five years on the sailboat Aileen, of the 6 Metre class, which was the boat used by the silver medal winning 1912 Summer Olympics Danish sailing team. Once he moved to Niterói, he started sailing with his brother, Lars Grael, also an Olympic medal winner, on the Bay of Guanabara. He is father of Olympic champion Martine Grael.
The 2007 Louis Vuitton Cup held in Valencia, Spain, from April 16 to June 6 was the event used to select the challenger for the 2007 America's Cup. Eleven potential challengers competed in the competition which consisted of two round robins, two semi-finals and a final. The winner was Emirates Team New Zealand, who challenged the defender Alinghi in June 2007 for the America's Cup.
Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, originally named Prada Challenge, then Luna Rossa Challenge, is an Italian sailboat racing syndicate first created to compete for the 2000 America's Cup. It won the Louis Vuitton Cup on their first attempt in 2000, but then lost the America's Cup match against the defending champion team, Team New Zealand.
Hans-Peter Steinacher is an Austrian sailor and Olympic champion. He won a gold medal in the Tornado class with Roman Hagara at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. They won the gold medal again at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.
The 5th Louis Vuitton Cup was held in Auckland, New Zealand, in 2000. The winner, Prada Challenge, went on to challenge for the 2000 America's Cup. It was the first time in the competition's history that there would not be an American challenger or defender.
Phillip Edward "Ed" Baird is an American sailor. He was a coach of the 1995 America's Cup-winning Team New Zealand and a helmsman for the 2007 America's Cup-winning Alinghi syndicate.

2019 was the sixth series of the GC32 Racing Tour. It was the first to include well-known GC32 teams Alinghi, Oman Air and Red Bull Sailing Team, following the collapse of the Extreme Sailing Series. The 2019 season consisted of five acts, returning to Villasimius, Riva del Garda, Lagos, and Palma de Mallorca, as well as its debut in Muscat, Oman.
