Leon Michael Hart is an American football coach and former player. Hart played college football as a running back at the University of Michigan, from 2004 to 2007, and holds the Michigan Wolverines career rushing record with 5,040 yards. He was selected by the Indianapolis Colts in 2008, and played three seasons in the NFL. Hart has worked as an assistant football coach at the University of Michigan, Syracuse University, Western Michigan University, Eastern Michigan University, and Indiana University Bloomington.

Tyler Deron Lockett is an American professional football wide receiver for the Seattle Seahawks of the National Football League (NFL). He was selected by the Seahawks in the third round of the 2015 NFL draft. He played college football for the Kansas State Wildcats. In college, he set numerous Kansas State football records and was both a 2011 All-American and 2014 College Football All-America Team consensus All-American selection. In college, he totaled 6,586 career all-purpose yards and 35 touchdowns, including 3,710 yards and 29 touchdowns as a receiver.

The Wildcats won their first bowl game since the 1949 Rose Bowl against California by defeating Mississippi State in the Gator Bowl 34–20. They finished the season 10–3.

Conference play began with a loss to the Texas Longhorns, which ended the Wildcats 5-game winning streak against the Longhorns. Their last lost against Texas was in 2003. The regular season ended with a win over in-state rival Kansas in the Sunflower Showdown. After completing the regular season with a 7–5 record, the Kansas State Wildcats returned for a bowl game for the fourth straight year, were selected to play in the 2013 Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl and played the Michigan Wolverines. The season ended with the Wildcats defeating the Wolverines, 31–14, to break a five-game bowl losing streak winning their first bowl game since the 2002 Holiday Bowl and finishing the season 8–5.

The 2022 Fiesta Bowl was a college football bowl game played on December 31, 2022, at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. The game was the 52nd annual playing of the Fiesta Bowl, one of the two semifinals of the 2022–23 College Football Playoff (CFP) semifinals, and was one of the bowl games concluding the 2022 FBS football season. The game began at approximately 2:00 p.m. MST and aired on ESPN. It featured two of the four teams chosen by the selection committee to participate in the playoff: the TCU Horned Frogs from the Big 12 Conference and the Michigan Wolverines from the Big Ten Conference. The winner qualified for the 2023 College Football Playoff National Championship against the winner of the other semifinal, hosted at the Peach Bowl.
