Daria Gavrilova and Irina Khromacheva were the 2012 champions, but Gavrilova was no longer eligible to compete in junior tennis, so was unable to defend her title. Khromacheva entered qualifying for the women's draw, but lost in the second qualifying round.

Barbora Krejčíková and Kateřina Siniaková defeated Anhelina Kalinina and Iryna Shymanovich in the final, 6–3, 6–1 to win the girls' doubles tennis title at the 2013 Wimbledon Championships. They would also win the senior title five years later.
Gabrielle Andrews and Taylor Townsend were the defending champions having won the 2012 event, but neither player chose to defend their title.

Hsieh Su-wei and Barbora Strýcová defeated Gabriela Dabrowski and Xu Yifan in the final, 6−2, 6−4 to win the ladies' doubles tennis title at the 2019 Wimbledon Championships. With the win, Strýcová attained the WTA no. 1 doubles ranking for the first time – Kristina Mladenovic, Elise Mertens and Ashleigh Barty were also in contention for the top ranking. Hsieh and Strýcová won the title without losing a set during the tournament.
Ashleigh Barty and Demi Schuurs are the defending champions but they chose not to participate together. Barty played alongside Victoria Azarenka, but lost in the semifinals to Barbora Krejčíková and Kateřina Siniaková.
The Gippsland Trophy is a new addition to the WTA Tour in 2021.
Elise Mertens and Aryna Sabalenka defeated Barbora Krejčíková and Kateřina Siniaková in the final, 6–2, 6–3, to win the women's doubles tennis title at the 2021 Australian Open. It was their second major doubles title as a team, after the 2019 US Open. With the win, Sabalenka claimed the world No. 1 doubles ranking.
Barbora Krejčíková and Kateřina Siniaková defeated Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Iga Świątek in the final, 6–4, 6–2 to win the women's doubles tennis title at the 2021 French Open. It was their second French Open title and third major title together. Krejčíková became the first woman to win both the singles and doubles tournaments at a major since Serena Williams at the 2016 Wimbledon Championships, and the first to do so at the French Open since Mary Pierce in 2000, making her the seventh woman to accomplish the sweep in French Open history.

It was their second French Open title as a team. Mladenovic extended her winning streak at the event to 18 consecutive match wins and three titles, having last lost in the quarterfinals of the 2018 tournament.
Veronika Kudermetova and Elise Mertens defeated the defending champions Barbora Krejčíková and Kateřina Siniaková in the final, 6–2, 4–6, [11–9] to win the doubles tennis title at the 2022 WTA Finals.
