Garbiñe Muguruza defeated the defending champion Serena Williams in the final, 7–5, 6–4 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2016 French Open. She became the second Spaniard to win the title, after Arantxa Sánchez Vicario. Muguruza lost only one set during the tournament, to Anna Karolína Schmiedlová in the first round. Williams was attempting to equal Steffi Graf's Open Era record of 22 major singles titles. She was also attempting to become only the second player, after Graf, to complete a quadruple career Grand Slam.

Belinda Bencic was the defending champion, but lost in the second round to Elena Vesnina.

Irina-Camelia Begu was the defending champion, but lost in the second round to Jana Čepelová.

Svetlana Kuznetsova was the defending champion and successfully defended her title, defeating Daria Gavrilova in the final, 6–2, 6–1.

Elena Vesnina defeated Svetlana Kuznetsova in the final, 6–7(6–8), 7–5, 6–4 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2017 Indian Wells Masters.

Elina Svitolina defeated Caroline Wozniacki in the final, 6–4, 6–0 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2017 Canadian Open. It was her third consecutive Premier 5 title, making her the first woman to win the first three Premier 5 tournaments in a season, as well as the first to win three consecutive Premier 5 tournaments since Wozniacki won Montreal and Tokyo in 2010 and Dubai in 2011. This was also Wozniacki's sixth consecutive loss in a final in 2017, making her the first to lose that many finals in a row in one season, as well as the first woman to lose six finals in a single season since Maria Sharapova in 2012.

Garbiñe Muguruza defeated Simona Halep in the final, 6–1, 6–0 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2017 Cincinnati Masters. By losing the final, Halep failed to take advantage of her third opportunity in 2017 to take over the WTA No. 1 singles ranking when the top ranking was only one match win away.

Aryna Sabalenka defeated Ashleigh Barty in the final, 6–0, 3–6, 6–4 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2021 Madrid Open. It was her 10th career WTA Tour singles title, and her first on clay.
