Western Australian soccer clubs will compete in 2016 for the Football West State Cup , known for sponsorship reasons as the Cool Ridge Cup. Clubs entered from the National Premier Leagues WA, the two divisions of the State League, a limited number of teams from various divisions of the 2016 Amateur League competition, and from regional teams from the South West, Goldfields, Great Southern and Midwest regions. This knockout competition was won by Floreat Athena, their sixth title.
The competition also served as the Western Australian Preliminary Rounds for the 2016 FFA Cup. The two finalists – Cockburn City and Floreat Athena – qualified for the final rounds, entering at the Round of 32.
A total of 65 teams took part in the competition, from Perth-based and regional-based competitions.

Floreat Athena Football Club is an association football (soccer) club based in Perth, Western Australia. The club competes in the National Premier Leagues Western Australia. The club's founders were of Greek heritage.
The National Premier Leagues Western Australia is a regional Australian semi-professional soccer league comprising teams from Western Australia. The league name is often abbreviated to NPL Western Australia or NPL WA. As a subdivision of the National Premier Leagues, the league is the highest level of the Western Australian league system. The competition is administered by Football West, the governing body of the sport in the state. In 2014, the league – formerly known as the Football West State League Premier Division – was rebranded into what exists today.
The 2014 FFA Cup preliminary rounds were a series of state-based knockout competitions, providing a qualification pathway for the 2014 FFA Cup, the Australian association football knockout cup competition.
Western Australian soccer clubs from the top three State-Based Divisions competed in 2009 for the WA State Challenge Cup, known that year as the Soccer Pools State Cup. This knockout competition was won by Floreat Athena, their fifth title.
The 2014 Football West season was the first season under the new competition format in Western Australia. The overall premier for the new structure qualified for the National Premier Leagues finals series, competing with the other state federation champions in a final knockout tournament to decide the National Premier Leagues Champion for 2014.

The preliminary rounds operated within a consistent national structure whereby club entry into the competition was staggered in each state/territory, with the winning clubs from Round 7 of the preliminary rounds in each member federation gaining direct entry into the Round of 32. All Australian clubs were eligible to enter the qualifying process through their respective FFA member federation, however only one team per club was permitted entry in the competition. Teams from the Northern Territory competed in this competition for the first time.

The 2020 FFA Cup preliminary rounds were the qualifying competition initially meant to decide 22 of the 32 teams to take part in the 2020 FFA Cup. Some preliminary matches were held in February and March, prior to the competition being suspended in mid-March due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Australia.
The 2021 Football West season was the eighth season since the establishment of the National Premier Leagues in Western Australia.
