The 2016–17 Académico do Aeroporto season were in the island division of football (soccer) and third of the Premier Division. The club won their 14th championship title and also their third straight and qualified into the 2017 National Championships in May. [1]
The 2017 Cape Verdean Football Championship season was the 38th beginner level competition of the first-tier football in Cape Verde. It started on 13 May and finished on 27 August, it started a days later than last season. Originally to finish on 15 July, instead, it was rescheduled to 27 August. The championship was governed by the Cape Verdean Football Federation.
On December 1, the club celebrated its 50th year of foundation. [2]
All of its matches took place in 2017. [1] Their first match was a win over Palmeira and started third. The club suffered a loss to Juventude and was fourth. Later, Académico do Aeroporto defeated Gaviões in their first ever participation with that club and their positions was placed second. Académico Aeroporto suffered another loss to Santa Maria on February 4 and was 4th placed. A four match winning streak occurred, first they defeated Académica do Sal in the Airport Derby and their positions climbed back to second where they remained up to the 12th round. After defeating three more, Florença, Verdun and Palmeira, they had their season's final loss to Juventude on March 26. Another win in their second participation with Gaviões on April 1 and defeated that club 4-1, one of two that was the club's highest for the season. A two goal draw with Santa Maria came after that. The Airport Derby came and another victory was made and Académico do Aeroporto's result became first place for the last few rounds. They made two more wins, the first was another club's highest match for the season where they defeated Florença Santa Maria 0-4. Their final match of the season knocked out Verdun Pedra de Lume from further participation in the regional Premier Division. Their home-away wins were 50/50, out of 29 goals, 16 were scored at home but much of its 12 goals were conceded at home totalling ten.

The club competed for the 14th time at the national championships. The two group system was replaced with the three group system featuring four clubs each and now has two meetings per club. Académico do Aeroporto is currently in Group B.
Not a single win was made but made two draws. The first two matches were a goal draw first with Académica do Porto Novo then with Paulense, both from the two zones of Santo Antão. Two losses the club now suffered, first a 2-0 loss to Mindelense on 27 May then a 1-3 loss to Académica do Porto Novo. At the end of the 4th round, the club was listed as a non-participant in the final stage as being last in Group B. Another win was made over Paulense defeating that club 1-3 where they scored their last national goal and became third in the group but both clubs were eliminated from the playoff stage. Also 6/8 goals were conceded away while 4/6 goals were scored away, it equalled away with scored and conceded goals. The final round was a loss to almighty Mindelense with the score 0-2 and 8/10 goals were conceded away. The club was out of competition.

Associação Académica do Sal is a football club that had played in the Premier division and plays in the Sal Island League in Cape Verde. It is based in the city of Espargos in the island of Sal and its location is on Palmeira Road next to the city library. It is one of many teams that only won one title since independence. Its current proprietor is Mário Ramos.
Académico do Aeroporto is a football club that had played in the Premier division and plays in the Sal Island League in Cape Verde. It is based in the city of Espargos in the island of Sal. The team was is named after its nearby airport. Its current director is Ivan Lopes since mid-February 2017, its chairman is Carlos Moniz who returned for the second time and its manager was Lúcio Antunes since 2015. Now that Verdun Pedra de Lume was relegated, the club became the island's five unrelegated original clubs.

It is based in the town of Pombas, the seat of Paúl in the northeastern part of the island of Santo Antão and is being the main club of Vale do Paul. Its current manager is Alberto Teixeira. Its nickname is Encarnados, the same nickname of Portugal's S.L. Benfica and many other clubs affiliated to Benfica. Since the introduction of the Second Division in the 2012-13 season, the club are one of two that have never been relegated, the other is Os Foguetões.

Its current head is Osvaldinho Silva Lopes and its coach is Gunga. The nickname of the club like many other Académicas is Mica.
Associação Académica do Fogo is a football club that currently plays in the Campeonato Nacional de Cabo Verde and in the Fogo Island League in Cape Verde. It is based in the island of Fogo and plays in the stadium with a capacity of 1000. The logo and the uniform as well as other teams with the name Académica and Académico in Cape Verde is identical to Académica de Coimbra, it features the volcanic mountain on the right. The club name and the year of foundation are at the bottom. Académica do Fogo are one of the unrelegated clubs on the island which includes Vulcânicos and Botafogo.

The tournament was organized by the Cape Verdean Football Federation. The schedule including its matches were created on Saturday January 10. CS Mindelense won the eleventh title and became the second club after Sporting Praia to win three in a row. Neither clubs participated in the CAF Champions League competition in 2016 and in the 2016 CAF Confederation Cup. This was the second ever and most recent finals competition that two clubs came from the same island as well as the same city.

The tournament was organized by the Sal Regional Football Association. Sport Clube Verdun won their second and recent title and qualified into the 2014 Cape Verdean Football Championships, their next in more than thirty years and the first in Group Stage. SC Verdun of Pedra de Lume won their second and recent title and finished with 20 points, a point difference from Académico do Aeroporto. Also Verdun had its best season results to date, in the following two seasons, the club did not reach the highest positions in the island.

All the matches were played in Estádio Marcelo Leitão except for clubs based in Santa Maria which played in its municipal stadium, in the following season, all clubs based in the south of the island played in that stadium. It was the first season that also featured a second division consisting of six new clubs. It was also the last season featuring six clubs in the Premier Division and for many years featuring ten matches each season.

As they were the 2016 national league winners, they qualified into the national championships. Mindelense will qualify to the 2017 regional super cup as champion later in the year.

The title total has became to be one of the most number of clubs having the most regional titles.

The tournament was organized by the Sal Regional Football Association. SC Santa Maria won their second title for the season.
