The 2016–17 South Alabama Jaguars women's basketball team represented the University of South Alabama during the 2016–17 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The Jaguars, led by fourth year head coach Terry Fowler, played their home games at the Mitchell Center as members of the Sun Belt Conference. They finished the season 11–20, 5–13 in Sun Belt play to finish in tenth place. They advanced to the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt women's tournament where they lost to Texas–Arlington.

The South Alabama Jaguars represent the University of South Alabama in NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletics. USA competes in the Sun Belt Conference; it is the conference's only remaining charter member from its inception. USA's athletics teams are nicknamed the Jaguars. Popular sports are baseball and men's basketball. USA sponsors 8 men's sports teams and 9 women's sports teams. The board of trustees voted to start a football program that began play in the fall of 2009.

The South Alabama Jaguars men's basketball program has competed in the Sun Belt Conference since 1978 when the league was formed. Since 1968, the Jaguars have compiled an overall record of 694–507 (.580). South Alabama has won the Sun Belt Conference championship five times and reached the NCAA tournament eight times. The Jaguars last NCAA tournament appearance was in 2008.

The South Alabama Jaguars football program, established in 2009, represents the University of South Alabama in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. South Alabama joined the FBS in 2012 as a member of the Sun Belt Conference (SBC).

The 1991 Sun Belt Conference men's basketball tournament was held March 2–4 at the Mobile Civic Center in Mobile, Alabama.

The 1997 Sun Belt Conference men's basketball tournament was held February 28–March 4 at Barton Coliseum in Little Rock, Arkansas.

The 1998 Sun Belt Conference men's basketball tournament was held February 27–March 3 at the Cajundome at the University of Southwestern Louisiana in Lafayette, Louisiana.

The 2018–19 South Alabama Jaguars women's basketball team represented the University of South Alabama during the 2018–19 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The Jaguars were led by sixth year head coach Terry Fowler and played their home games at the Mitchell Center as members in the Sun Belt Conference. They finished the season 25–11, 9–9 in Sun Belt play to finish in a tie for sixth place. They advanced to the championship game of the Sun Belt women's tournament where they lost to Little Rock. They received an at-large bid to the WNIT where they defeated Lamar in the first round before losing to Wyoming in the second round.

The 2019–20 Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team represents the University of Louisiana at Lafayette during the 2019–20 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The Ragin' Cajuns are led by eighth-year head coach Garry Brodhead and play all home games at the Cajundome along with the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns men's basketball team with the exception of their March 5 meeting with UT Arlington at Earl K. Long Gymnasium, the first basketball game to be held there since 2016. They are members in the Sun Belt Conference.

The 2019–20 South Alabama Jaguars men's basketball team represented the University of South Alabama during the 2019–20 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Jaguars were led by second-year head coach Richie Riley and played their home games at the Mitchell Center in Mobile, Alabama as members in the Sun Belt Conference. They finished the season 20–11, 13–7 in Sun Belt play to finish in a tie for second place. They were set to be the No. 2 seed in the Sun Belt tournament, however, the tournament was cancelled amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 2019–20 South Alabama Jaguars women's basketball team represented the University of South Alabama during the 2019–20 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The Jaguars were led by seventh year head coach Terry Fowler and played their home games at the Mitchell Center as members in the Sun Belt Conference. They finished the season 16–16, 9–9 in Sun Belt play to finish in tie for fifth place. They made it to the Sun Belt tournament as the sixth seed where they defeated Arkansas State 82–71 in the First Round and also defeated UT Arlington 47–55 in the Quarterfinals. Shortly before playing Coastal Carolina in the semifinals, the Sun Belt canceled the remainder tournament in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, which was followed by the NCAA cancelling all post-season play.

The 2020–21 South Alabama Jaguars men's basketball team represented the University of South Alabama during the 2020–21 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Jaguars, led by third-year head coach Richie Riley, played their home games at the Mitchell Center in Mobile, Alabama as members in the Sun Belt Conference. With the creation of divisions to cut down on travel due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, they played in the East division. They finished the season 17–11, 19–7 to finish in third place in the East division. They defeated Louisiana–Monroe in the first round of the Sun Belt tournament before losing to Louisiana in the quarterfinals.

The basketball team, led by seventh-year head coach Terry Fowler, played all home games at the Mitchell Center along with the South Alabama Jaguars men's basketball team.
